The pen holder "Artist Mahogany" is a straight wooden holder with a warm reddish-brown tone and a matte chrome-plated metal grip section – it comes pre-fitted with an insertion nib and is ready to use immediately. The wood feels round and comfortable in the hand, while the cool metal of the grip section provides a tactile contrast to the warm wood tone. At approximately 20 cm, it corresponds to the classic pen holder size that allows for a relaxed, natural pen grip.

Special Features

  • Mahogany-colored wood: The shaft is uniformly colored in a rich reddish-brown – surface wear marks barely change the overall appearance as the coloring goes deep into the material.
  • Matte chrome-plated grip section: Matte chrome does not reflect light and gives the holder a calm, uniform appearance. The metallic zone provides secure, non-stick grip when holding.
  • Straight holder with globe insert: The standard globe insert in the grip section accommodates common insertion nibs – pointed nibs, broad nibs, band nibs, and drawing nibs typically fit without problems. Tubular nibs are an exception as they require a special holder.
  • Including writing nib: The holder comes with an insertion nib and is ready to use right away.
  • Approximately 20 cm length: Balanced between fine control when writing and sufficient lever length for a relaxed, fatigue-free grip.

Application & Tips

  • Simply insert the supplied nib into the globe insert and twist gently until it has a firm hold – no tools needed. To change the nib, carefully pry it out, preferably using a cloth to protect your fingertips.
  • As a straight holder, the "Artist Mahogany" is particularly well-suited for band nibs, broad nibs, and redip nibs – that is, for historical scripts like Gothic, Uncial, or Chancery script, but also for ink drawings and free illustration.
  • For pointed nib calligraphy in strongly right-slanted scripts (Copperplate, Spencerian), a straight holder can also be used; those who want to optimize the writing angle should choose an oblique holder instead. For all other scripts and drawing techniques, the straight holder is the first choice.
  • Water-based inks and calligraphic inks flow evenly through insertion nibs – after a work session, rinse the nib briefly under running water and store dry. Do not soak the wooden shaft.
  • On smooth, calendered paper, the insertion nib glides particularly smoothly and produces a clear, uniform appearance. Rough or absorbent paper can catch on the nib tips.

For Calligraphy Enthusiasts

Straight pen holders with standard globe inserts accommodate the entire common range of insertion nibs – from fine pointed nibs for hairline calligraphy to band nibs with ink reservoirs to wide poster nibs. The nib numbers of different manufacturers refer to the shaft diameter: nibs with narrow shafts (e.g., many pointed nibs) sit in the globe insert at the inner clamping zone, wider band nibs engage further out. Those who systematically try out different nib geometries can use the same wooden holder as a constant base – as long as no tubular nibs are in use. Mahogany wood has a medium density and absorbs little moisture in dry storage conditions, keeping the weight and shape of the holder stable long-term.
