The Lamy joy is a calligraphy pen with a polished stainless steel broad nib – designed for creative lettering, beautiful handwriting and everything in between. The high-gloss ASA plastic body follows the design language of the Lamy safari: ergonomic grip section, distinctive metal clip, tapered body as a reference to classic pen holders. Made in Germany, filled via Lamy T10 cartridges or optionally via converter from an ink bottle.

Special Features

  • Polished stainless steel broad nib (1.1 mm): The wide, flat nib tip creates the characteristic contrast between fine cross strokes and broad vertical strokes – the foundation for classic calligraphic scripts like Italic or Foundational Hand. The polished surface glides particularly smoothly on smooth, calendered paper.
  • Ergonomic grip section: The triangular grip section from the Safari design guides the index finger, middle finger and thumb into a stable position – important for calligraphy, where the nib angle to the baseline must remain constant.
  • ASA plastic housing: ASA is more UV and weather-resistant than ABS – the high-gloss black remains color-stable and shows no yellowing even after extended use.
  • Distinctive metal clip: Springy and grippy, securely holds the pen in a notebook or pen case – no slipping during transport.
  • Lamy T10 cartridge system: Includes a blue ink cartridge. Switch to any T10 colors or use the Lamy Z28 converter for ink bottles.
  • Left-handed friendly: The joy is also available in a left-handed version (L) – the nib is appropriately angled for left-handed writing.

Application & Tips

  • Nib angle for calligraphy: For classic Italic scripts, hold the pen at approximately 45° to the baseline – this brings out the full width of the broad nib stroke. Keep the nib angle to the writing line constant at approximately 30–45°, depending on the script style.
  • Paper recommendation: On smooth, ink-resistant paper, the broad nib shows its cleanest stroke edges – on highly absorbent papers, the ink can easily feather. Tomoe River paper or smooth calendered paper are ideal surfaces.
  • Lettering and journaling: With the 1.1 mm nib, you can set headers and initials in bullet journals or diaries without the writing becoming too heavy – a good introduction to broad nib calligraphy.
  • Changing ink color: With the Lamy Z28 converter, you can use any ink from an ink bottle – ideal for experimenting with different colors and properties (e.g. shimmer or iron gall inks). Iron gall inks should be used with caution, as they can attack the nib over time.
  • Cleaning: After longer breaks or ink changes, rinse the pen under lukewarm water until the water runs clear – broad nibs have slightly more channel volume than standard nibs and benefit from thorough cleaning.

For Calligraphy Enthusiasts

The 1.1 mm broad nib is the narrowest cut in the joy range – and thus the most versatile. Fine Italic scripts like Copperplate variants or modern brush lettering derivatives can be created with it just as easily as simple everyday handwriting with character. If you want to go deeper: The 1.5 mm and 1.9 mm nib sizes are available as replacement nibs or in separate joy models and allow even more pronounced width contrasts. Since the joy uses the Lamy cartridge system, pigmented calligraphy inks in cartridge form can also be used – however, always clean promptly after use so that no pigment residue dries in the broad nib.
