The Orenz Nero is Pentel's flagship mechanical pencil from the Orenz series: a 0.2 mm pencil that actually works in everyday use. This is achieved through the combination of two mechanisms – the sliding barrel that permanently protects the lead, and the automatic lead advancement that runs without further intervention after the first click. The housing and grip zone are made from a single piece of a special resin-metal composite material: matte black, cool and slightly grainy to the touch, with the density of fired clay.

Special Features

  • Anti-Break System (Orenz Mechanism): The barrel slides along with the diminishing lead while writing – the lead never extends further than the barrel protects it. Even at 0.2 mm the lead doesn't break, not even with a more oblique stroke or slightly more pressure.
  • Automatic Lead Advancement: Click once, then the pencil writes all the way to the last millimeter of lead. Every time the tip lifts off the paper, the lead automatically advances. No interruptions, no tapping clicks in the middle of a sentence.
  • 12-Sided One-Piece Body: Grip zone and shaft are made in one piece – no play, no wobbling, no creaking. The twelve flat surfaces give the finger a clear resting surface without sharp edges.
  • Resin-Metal Composite Material: The housing made of nylon-steel composite feels denser and heavier than pure plastic housing, but noticeably warmer than pure metal. 18 g at 143 mm length create a center of gravity slightly forward – the pencil sits guided in your hand.
  • Sleek Matte Finish Surface: Completely finished in matte black, without glossy accents. "Nero" is Italian for black – and "Orenz" is even contained in it read backwards.
  • Retractable Barrel: The barrel can be retracted into the body with firm pressure – for transport without a case.

Application & Tips

  • One-Time Start: Before writing, press the push button exactly once until the barrel extends. After that the automatic advancement runs. Don't press the button again while writing – this would advance the lead too far and it would break.
  • Writing Angle: The pencil works most reliably at a writing angle of around 45° or steeper. At very shallow angles the barrel can drag on the paper. Those used to holding fountain pens at a shallow angle will need a brief adjustment period.
  • Lead Recommendation: Pentel AinStein leads in HB or F are the most durable options for 0.2 mm. Softer grades (2B and up) tend to jam at this diameter; harder grades (H and up) can scratch the paper when the point tapers very finely.
  • Technical Drawing and Drafting: The permanently extended barrel has constant length – it doesn't get pushed away when placed against rulers and stencils, which sometimes happens with conventional mechanical pencils with retractable barrels.
  • Cleaning: A cleaning pencil is included in the delivery. With 0.2 mm leads, the new lead can occasionally catch in the feed mechanism during lead changes; the cleaning pencil resolves this quickly.
  • Detail Drawing and Manga/Illustration: The 0.2 mm lead allows lines that are barely achievable with a fineliner – ideal for hatching, construction details, or fine lettering in tight spaces.

For Mechanical Pencil Enthusiasts

The Orenz Nero carries two independent mechanisms in one housing: The Orenz sliding barrel system has been active in the series since 2014 and enabled the return of the 0.2 mm lead to the mass market – Pentel had first developed the format in the 1960s but discontinued it because no protection mechanism made the lead practical for everyday use. The automatic advancement of the Nero is an independent development compared to the basic Orenz line: While the standard Orenz advances manually, in the Nero the movement of the tip lifting off the paper automatically triggers each lead advancement. The nylon-steel composite body is milled as a one-piece construction – grip zone and shaft without a joint, which eliminates resonance in the housing. The tip and push button are made of brass, the clip is made of steel.
