The TWSBI KAI is a limited edition piston filler made of deep blue acrylic resin – a material with a fine flake structure that shimmers in the light and evokes the depths of calm water. Rosé gold-colored metal accents on the clip, cap, and grip section threads provide warm contrasts to the cool blue of the body. The integrated piston filling system and complete disassemblability follow the proven TWSBI philosophy: maximum control over your own writing instrument. Available in nib sizes EF, F, M, and B.

• Deep blue acrylic resin with flake structure: The material creates an iridescent, pearl-like shimmer depending on the light – not a uniform blue, but a lively surface with depth effect.
• Rosé gold-plated Jowo #5 stainless steel nib: The Jowo #5 geometry is known for its consistent ink flow; the rosé gold plating visually connects the nib and metal fittings into a harmonious overall image.
• Rosé gold-colored accents on clip, cap ring, and grip section: The metal parts are uniformly finished in rosé gold and set precise color accents along the entire length of the pen.
• Integrated piston filling system with sight window: Turning the end knob activates the piston – no converter, no cartridge changes. The transparent sight window in the barrel shows the current ink level at a glance.
• Generous ink volume: Piston fillers hold significantly more ink than cartridges or standard converters – ideal for extended writing sessions without interruption.
• Fully disassemblable: Silicone grease and disassembly tool are included. No additional tools needed for deep cleaning, O-ring maintenance, or nib replacement.
• Cap cannot be posted: TWSBI recommends not posting the cap on the barrel to avoid scratches on the acrylic resin – the pen is dimensioned so that it feels comfortable in the hand even without a posted cap.

Application & Tips

• Ink selection: The deep blue of the body harmonizes particularly well with darker ink colors – navy blue, indigo, ink in gray or black – but also with rosé gold or copper tones that pick up the metal. Shimmer inks showcase beautifully through the sight window: the glitter effect is visible in the barrel as soon as you fill it.
• Nib size EF: For small, carefully controlled handwriting or fine lines on smooth, calendered paper. Fine lines look particularly sharp and clear on Tomoe River Paper.
• Nib size F: Versatile everyday size for normal handwriting, journal, or calendar entries.
• Nib size M: More ink flow and line width – good for headings, readable notes on rough paper, or when you want stronger shading from the ink.
• Nib size B: Wide line with pronounced ink flow – for signatures, headings, or decorative writing. Shading effects of inks are most pronounced with the B nib.
• Cleaning: Regular rinsing with lukewarm water every 2–4 weeks or when changing inks keeps the piston system functioning durably. The included silicone grease serves to care for O-rings after complete disassembly.
• A brief cleaning before first use is recommended, as TWSBI dip tests nibs at the factory – ink residue in the nib channel is possible due to production.

The Jowo #5 nib matches the nib format of the TWSBI Diamond 580 – a well-documented format in the pen community with broad aftermarket availability for replacement and replacement nibs. The rosé gold plating is purely cosmetic and does not affect writing characteristics; the underlying stainless steel construction ensures typical nib stability and a direct, minimally flexible writing feel. The acrylic resin body is lighter than metal bodies of comparable pens and makes the KAI convenient even for extended writing sessions. The KAI is part of a series of limited edition TWSBI acrylic piston fillers – predecessors such as the "Aurora" and "Draco" were not produced further after their run; the KAI follows this tradition.
