Traveler's Notebook Regular Size Refill "003" blank
The Refill "003" is the blank insert for the Traveler's Notebook Regular – 64 pages of unlined MD paper in a compact portrait format of 11 × 21 cm, saddle-stitched and lying completely flat. MD paper was developed by Designphil specifically for this purpose: 80 g/m², acid-free, with a fine, lightly textured surface that feels silky-smooth under the nib without slipping. The notebook fits into any Regular cover of the Traveler's Notebook and can be combined with or swapped for other refills.
Features
- MD paper, 80 g/m², acid-free: Fountain pen-friendly without reservation – ink doesn't bleed, doesn't feather, and shows minimal show-through with normal ink loads. Roller inks and fineliner pens also behave in a controlled manner.
- Fine paper texture: The subtle tooth provides tactile feedback when writing and keeps the line precise – noticeably pleasant with broad nibs or soft pencils.
- Blank layout: No lines, no dots – the page responds to everything: freehand text, sketches, layouts, collages, pasted-in finds.
- Saddle stitched: The notebook lies completely flat, even in the middle of the block – no creasing, no resistance when writing right to the spine.
- Made in Japan: Paper and binding from Japanese production.
Use & Tips
- Fountain pen with broad nib or stub nib: MD paper shows ink colours particularly rich and brilliant – ideal for showcasing shading and colour shifts from aqueous inks.
- Sketches and hand lettering: Pencil glides smoothly, fineliner produces sharp edges. Watercolour in thin layers is possible; for heavy wet applications, choose a watercolour refill instead.
- Travel journal and scrapbooking: Tickets, labels and photos can be glued directly in – the blank surface gives layouts room without imposing a structure.
- Combining with other refills: Multiple notebooks can be held together in the same cover with a connecting band – for example, blank for sketches, lined for notes.
- Backing sheet: For those who occasionally want straight lines, place a dark ruled sheet underneath – the thin MD paper allows the lines to show through nicely.
For Paper Enthusiasts
MD paper is not archival – aqueous fountain pen inks and pigment inks adhere well, but archival-quality documentation should be tested with pigment-based inks. The paper is acid-free and thus long-lasting: pages barely yellow over the years. The subtle texture results from the calendering process and is deliberately kept lighter than classical typewriter paper – fountain pen nibs glide without resistance, whilst a pencil still has enough grip to produce even strokes.
