The Tsubame Notebook Section grid is a Japanese school notebook with a long tradition – virtually unchanged in design since 1947, but featuring paper that fountain pen users today still love. The ivory-colored foolscap paper (81.4 g/m²) lies smooth under the pen, accepts ink quickly, and shows hardly any show-through. The 5-mm grid is printed in subtle gray – present enough for orientation, discrete enough not to distract from the writing.

Special Features

  • 5-mm grid in gray: The grid is equally suitable for tables, sketches, technical notes, and structured writing – the restrained gray does not interfere with the writing.
  • Ivory-colored foolscap paper, 81.4 g/m²: Acid-free and archival quality; ink dries quickly, minimal fraying or bleed-through – even with wet pen or broad writing nib.
  • Water-based grid printing ink: The grid is printed with water-based ink that does not soften or smudge when in contact with ink.
  • Saddle-stitched binding with linen tape spine: The notebook lies flat on the table, the binding withstands frequent opening; the dark blue cardboard cover protects the pages.
  • Seasonal paper production: Tsubame paper is produced only in spring and autumn – when water temperature and water quality are optimal for paper quality.
  • Watermark in the paper: When held up to light, the paper shows a fine grid structure watermark – a visible feature of the elaborate papermaking process.

Application & Tips

  • Fountain pen with fine to broad nib: The paper responds to water-based ink with very short drying times and clear writing – inks with strong shading properties are particularly striking on the smooth surface.
  • Technical drawing and layouts: The 5-mm grid provides a reliable foundation for grid sketches, floor plans, diagrams, or bullet journal layouts without a ruler.
  • Studies and structured note-taking: B5 is the classic Japanese college notebook format – large enough for multi-column notes, compact enough for your bag.
  • Calligraphy practice: The smooth, uniform paper is suitable for Western calligraphy with broad pen; the grid structure helps align strokes and angles.
  • Archiving: Due to its acid-free nature, the paper does not yellow; notes, drawings, and ink text are preserved long-term.

For Paper Enthusiasts

Tsubame paper belongs to the category of unsized, wood-free foolscap papers with a slightly rough microtexture that, despite its smooth feel, provides noticeable feedback under the pen. At 81.4 g/m², it falls in the mid-weight range – thin enough for a slim notebook, heavy enough for stable writing feel. The seasonal production method directly influences paper surface quality: low water temperatures in spring and autumn slow down fiber processing, resulting in more uniform fiber distribution. In 2012, the Tsubame Notebook received the Good Design Long Life Design Award – one of the few design prizes that explicitly honors timeless everyday objects.
