The Stalogy 016 is a Japanese notebook whose strength lies within: 81.5 g/m² smooth writing paper that feels silky to the touch with fountain pens, pencils, and ballpoint pens alike. The B5 format – 179 × 252 mm – sits pleasantly between A5 and A4 and provides noticeably more writing space than a small notebook. The black softcover is made from Gokanshi paper: a slightly textured, matte-velvety surface with its own character.

Special Features

  • Smooth 81.5 g/m² Japanese paper: The surface is dense and evenly calendered – ink flows uniformly without feathering, even with wet fountain pens or broad nibs. Slight ghosting is possible; bleeding only occurs with markers.
  • Thread-bound binding: The spine stays permanently flat, pages open completely – the notebook lies flat on the table without back pressure.
  • Ruling in soft gray, 7 mm line spacing: The restrained line color lets the handwriting take center stage. The free head area at the top is suitable for dates, headings, or stamps.
  • Gokanshi cover: The softcover made from this traditional Japanese paper variety has a slightly tactile, almost woven surface – flexible and grippy at the same time.
  • Writable spine label: A white label on the book spine is ready to write on – practical when multiple notebooks are in use simultaneously.
  • Rounded corners: No bulging, no bending – the notebook remains shape-stable even after extended use in a bag.

Application & Tips

  • Fountain pen: The paper handles wet inks and broad nibs without problems. Fine to medium-width nibs show particularly sharp handwriting on this surface. Those wanting to explore calligraphic line variation with a broad nib will find a responsive, smooth writing surface here.
  • Pencil and mechanical pencil: The slightly smooth surface offers little resistance to pencil graphite – fine gradations in gray tone stand out well.
  • Ballpoint pen and oil-based refills: On the dense paper, oil-based ballpoint refills glide particularly smoothly; fast-drying gel refills also work reliably.
  • Free head area as structural aid: The unlined area at the top is suitable for a daily date, topic abbreviations, or simply as white space – those who take notes systematically can use it for stamps or numbering.
  • Multiple notebooks in parallel: Thanks to the colored cover and writable spine label, thematic notebooks are immediately distinguishable on the shelf or in a bag.

For Paper Enthusiasts

The inner paper of the Stalogy 016 is a specially selected, calendered paper from Japanese production, chosen after testing with various writing instruments. At 81.5 g/m², it is noticeably more substantial than many thin Japanese notebooks – the combination of weight and smoothness creates a surface that holds ink precisely without impeding the pen. The Gokanshi cover – a traditional Japanese composite paper with fine fiber structure – is softer and more flexible than hardcover notebooks but sturdier than simple cardboard. Please note: The paper of the Stalogy 016 is not archival quality; for archival content, an archival-quality ink should be tested.
