The Midori MD Notebook Journal 1 Day 1 Page in A5 format follows a simple principle: one page per day, 368 pages for a whole year. The interior is made of MD paper with 5 mm dot grid – cream-white, smooth and with a silky surface on which fountain pen ink flows without feathering or bleeding through. The open thread binding in Codex style allows the notebook to lie completely flat from the first page to the last. The plain paper cover feels cool and firm in the hand.

Features

  • MD paper with 5 mm dot grid: The dots are printed in a subtle blue-green and visually recede when writing – enough orientation for straight lines and grids without dominating the handwriting. Two larger dots at the top of each page mark the date area.
  • Acid-free, ink-resistant MD paper: The smooth, slightly silky-creamy surface takes fountain pen ink evenly and dries quickly. No feathering, minimal show-through – even with wet-writing nibs or saturated inks.
  • Open thread binding (Codex): The binding is visible at the spine, keeps the book completely flat when open and gives way even when writing into the gutter. No warping, no spring against the spine.
  • Perforated page corners as progress indicator: Each corner can be cleanly separated when an entry is complete – so you can immediately see where the next day begins, without bookmarks or searching through the block.
  • Index labels included: Self-adhesive labels allow personal organisation by month, topic or your own system.
  • Paper cover: The cover is made of the same characteristic MD paper – sturdier than it looks, with a tactile quality between paper and cardboard, and develops its own patina over time.

Use & Tips

  • Daily journal without printed dates: The format is undated – if you skip a day, you don't lose a page. If you have more to say, simply use two pages. The concept is a framework, not a constraint.
  • Fountain pen with fine to medium nib: MD paper rewards well-adjusted nibs particularly: the smooth surface lets fine lines stand out clearly and shows shading with saturated inks distinctly. Stub nibs work well too; flex nibs with very wet ink flow should be paired with ink set to flow more dryly.
  • Bullet journalling and structured layouts: The 5 mm dot grid works equally well for weekly spreads, habit trackers, sketches and flowing text – without showing lines or grids.
  • Gel rollers and fineliners: Water-based ink systems also perform well on MD paper. Quick-drying gel refills produce clean, high-contrast lines.
  • Make use of perforated corners: The separated corners can be reused as small bookmarks, colour swatches or ink test flags.
  • Combine with a protective cover: The notebook fits into matching MD Codex A5 covers in paper or plastic – for extra protection during daily use.

For Paper Enthusiasts

MD paper has been continuously refined since the 1960s according to the Kaizen principle – with the stated aim of optimising performance with different writing systems. The result is paper that is acid-free and therefore long-lasting: inks do not yellow, the paper itself remains dimensionally stable over years. The cream-white tone is no coincidence, but reduces contrast stress during long writing sessions. If you keep the notebook as a yearly archive, you end up with a complete book – the thread binding and paper quality are designed for precisely this durability.
