Pentel Orenz Nero Mechanical Pencil (0.5 mm)
The Orenz Nero is Pentel's flagship mechanical pencil – entirely in black, 140 mm long, with a metal body and twelve-sided metal grip section. The name Nero (Italian for "black") is no accident: no colour accents, no chrome, no contrast – just matte black from tip to push button. What makes it special is the combination of two systems: the Orenz anti-break mechanism with its sliding sleeve guide and automatic lead advance technology, which allows the pencil to work completely independently after the first click.
Features
- Automatic lead advance technology: The lead guide sleeve retracts flush with the lead whilst writing. As soon as the pencil is lifted from the paper, a spring mechanism automatically advances the lead. After the first click, the push button never needs to be pressed again – until the lead is completely used up.
- Sliding protective guide (anti-break system): The lead never protrudes beyond the guide sleeve whilst writing. The sleeve sits flat on the paper and protects the lead completely from breaking – even with firmer pressure or harder grades.
- Twelve-sided metal grip section: The 12-faceted design sits comfortably in the hand, prevents the pencil from slipping, and provides clear orientation of the tip angle when drawing. Matte black coating, cool to the touch.
- Metal and plastic body: The body combines both materials into a pencil light enough for extended writing sessions whilst maintaining noticeable solidity. Low centre of gravity thanks to metal construction in the front section, ensuring steady, controlled line control.
- Retractable lead guide sleeve: By pressing the sleeve against a surface whilst holding the push button, the guide retracts fully into the body – pocket-safe, without a cap.
- Integrated eraser: A refillable eraser (Type Z2-1N) sits beneath the push button.
- Integrated clip: Solid metal clip, firmly attached to the body, stays secure even in a shirt pocket.
Use & Tips
- Getting started: Press the push button once until the lead guide sleeve extends – after that, the advance mechanism runs automatically. Press the push button again only when the lead is completely used up and refilled.
- Writing angle: The automatic advance works most reliably at a writing angle of approximately 60° to the paper surface. At very shallow angles, the guide sleeve may drag on the paper.
- Paper selection: For smooth, calendered paper with a firm backing – the lead guide glides cleanly here without damaging the paper. Softer or lightly textured paper also works, as long as the backing is stable.
- Technical drawing and sketching: The constant lead length without manual advancement allows evenly wide lines over long distances – ideal for construction sketches, tabular notes or precise handwriting.
- Refilling lead: Compatible with 0.5 mm lead. Pentel AinStein lead in up to 7 grades is suitable as refill lead and optimally matched to the guide system.
- Cleaning: If the lead guide becomes clogged, the pencil can be unscrewed at the body; the guide sleeve can be cleared and cleaned using a thin needle (0.5 mm diameter).
For Mechanical Pencil Enthusiasts
The Orenz system is based on the sliding sleeve principle: the lead is never advanced further than the sleeve tip extends – technically, lead breakage is therefore ruled out as long as used correctly. With the Nero, Pentel supplements this system with a spring mechanism inside the tip that retracts the sleeve to its original position when the pencil is lifted, whilst automatically advancing the lead. Barrel and grip section are seamlessly made – no transitions, no rattle, no play between parts. The weight sits in the front third due to the metal content, making the pencil feel balanced despite its slim profile (9 mm diameter). The 0.5 mm format of the Nero is considered the most reliable of the series by users for automatic lead advance – the wider lead breaks less frequently than 0.2 or 0.3 mm versions and tolerates somewhat more pressure.
