Hobonichi Cover 100%ORANGE: Where’s the Squirrel Going (A5)
The A5 cover "Where's the Squirrel Going" is based on the picture book "Ohikkoshi" by Japanese illustrator duo 100%ORANGE – Kenji Oikawa and Mayuko Takeuchi. A troop of squirrels stretches across the entire outer surface, from front to back, passing by boots, a flower pot, and even over a cat. The polyester fabric carries the motif as a wraparound print, while the interior shines in warm orange.
Special Features
- Wraparound Picture Book Print: The illustration continues seamlessly from the front to the back – the entire cover becomes a narrative. Individual squirrels wear striped shirts, carry umbrellas, or wear belts, inviting discovery.
- Warm Orange Interior: The inner lining envelops your planner and hands in a bright, saturated orange – the same perspective from which the squirrels see their surroundings.
- Butterfly Pen Holder in Synthetic Leather: Two brown pen loops made of synthetic leather function simultaneously as a closure. Pens up to 13.5 mm in diameter fit through the loops; when new, they are often slightly stiff and become more supple with use.
- Bookmark with Nut Charm: Two ribbon bookmarks, each ending with a brown charm in the shape of a nut – a small, fitting detail to the overall motif.
- Signature Pocket on the Inside Left: The left inner pocket bears the signature of 100%ORANGE.
- No Exterior Pocket: The clean, uninterrupted outer surface is intentionally designed without a pocket so the motif remains undisturbed.
Application & Tips
- Perfect for Hobonichi Techo Cousin (A5): The cover is precisely tailored to the A5 planner book and protects it from abrasion, dirt, and light impacts in everyday use.
- Using the Butterfly Closure Correctly: Thread a pen through both loops – this keeps your planner securely closed in your bag without needing a rubber band.
- Pen Selection: The loops accommodate pens up to 13.5 mm in diameter. Pens with rubber or textured grips may be slightly more difficult to thread; smooth barrels slide through more easily.
- Cover on Cover: A transparent cover on cover can be placed over this fabric cover to protect the outer surface from heavier wear without obscuring the motif.
- Matching Hobonichi Accessories: Hobonichi offers complementary writing materials in the Ohikkoshi motif – covers, notepads, and weekly planners can be combined into a cohesive set.
For Hobonichi Enthusiasts
100%ORANGE is the joint pseudonym of Kenji Oikawa and Mayuko Takeuchi, who create illustrations, picture books, manga, and animations. "Ohikkoshi" first appeared in 2007 as a series in the magazine Ohanashi Pooka and was published in 2008 as a standalone picture book. The print on the cover is created by dyeing or printing on white fabric – slight color variations between individual copies are production-related and are considered a characteristic feature of handcrafted Hobonichi covers. The cover opens flat to 180°, which may cause slight waviness at the seams on the outside; this is by design and not a quality defect.
