The Kaweco Special mechanical pencil harks back to office pencils from the 1930s — and visibly carries this heritage: the characteristic 8-sided profile in matte black aluminum, 140 mm long, 10 mm diameter, with chrome-plated brass rotating parts on the push button and clip. The glossy anodized surface creates a deliberate contrast to the matte shaft — cool to the touch, yet pleasantly grippy thanks to the edges. Available in four lead sizes: 0.5 mm, 0.7 mm, 0.9 mm, and 2.0 mm.

Special Features

  • 8-sided aluminum profile: The octagonal profile prevents rolling away and gives the hand a natural resting point — even during extended writing or sketching without fatigue.
  • Matte black aluminum with glossy anodized surface: Anodizing permanently protects the aluminum from abrasion and scratches. The matte base surface remains grippy, while the glossy accents on the edges give the pencil its visual structure.
  • Chrome-plated brass rotating parts: Push button, clip, and sleeve are made of chrome-plated brass — heavier and more sturdy than plastic, with a distinctly satisfying tactile feel when advancing the lead.
  • Ratchet-based feed mechanism with lead reservoir: The push mechanism works with ratcheting, advances the lead evenly, and eliminates the need for sharpening — consistent line width from the beginning to the end of the lead.
  • Integrated eraser: A replaceable eraser sits under the push button — right on the pencil, without separate accessories.
  • Four lead sizes: 0.5 mm for fine, precise lines; 0.7 mm as a versatile all-rounder; 0.9 mm for stronger, richer strokes; 2.0 mm for wide sketch lines, shading, and layout work.

Application & Tips

  • 0.5 mm – technical drawing and tight lettering: The fine lead is suitable for tables, marginalia, technical sketches, and all situations where line accuracy matters. Works particularly precisely on smooth, calendered paper.
  • 0.7 mm – everyday writing and sketching: The more robust lead breaks less frequently, flows smoothly over rougher paper, and is the straightforward choice for notebooks, bullet journals, and planner systems.
  • 0.9 mm – layout and generous sketching: Rich, easily readable lines without increased pressure — ideal for initial drafts, hand lettering guides, or notebooks with slightly rougher surfaces.
  • 2.0 mm – shading, sketching, freehand drawing: With a 2.0 mm graphite lead, you can create broad tones, build areas, and develop sketches with more graphic expression. The lead can produce varying line widths through gentle tilting.
  • Lead replacement: Remove the push button, pull out the eraser — behind it lies the lead reservoir. Kaweco leads of the respective size fit directly; leads from other manufacturers are compatible as long as length and diameter match.
  • Eraser replacement: The built-in eraser is available separately as a spare part and can be changed in seconds.

For Writing and Drawing Instrument Enthusiasts

The Kaweco Special mechanical pencil originates from the mechanical pencils that Kaweco manufactured from the early decades of the 20th century in Heidelberg — initially from hard rubber, later from celluloid. Today's aluminum version replaces the earlier rotating mechanism with a ratchet-based feed mechanism with lead reservoir, making the advance more even and requiring less maintenance. The anodizing process creates an electrochemically generated oxide layer on the aluminum that is hard, scratch-resistant, and permanent — unlike applied lacquer, it does not peel off. The chrome-plated brass parts are cast and turned, not stamped, which explains the satisfying tactile feel of the push button. For the 2.0 mm variant, colored graphite leads and specialty leads (e.g., for glass or stone) are also available, extending the range of applications far beyond traditional paper.
