The Orenz Nero is Pentel's most refined answer to the delicate nature of fine mechanical pencil leads. The shaft, crafted from a special resin-metal composite, feels cool, dense and light – sturdier than pure plastic, noticeably lighter than solid metal. The matte black body is a single seamless piece: grip zone and shaft with no transition, no play, no rattle. Combined with a lead advance mechanism that works entirely automatically after the first click.

Features

  • Sliding protective sleeve system (Orenz System): A movable guide sleeve surrounds the lead all the way to the writing surface. When the pencil touches the paper, the sleeve retracts slightly – the lead writes inside the tube. This means a 0.3 mm lead won't break even under normal writing pressure.
  • Fully automatic lead advance: Press once – done. Every time you lift the pencil from the paper, the mechanism automatically advances the lead. The push button at the end remains untouched until the lead is completely used up.
  • Single-piece shaft made from resin-metal composite: Grip zone and shaft are manufactured as one. This eliminates the slight wobble or twisting that multi-part constructions can show at the joint. The material feels firm and subtly cool to the touch.
  • Twelve-sided shaft with low centre of gravity: The slight faceting of the shaft gives the pencil a secure grip without rotation. The centre of gravity sits close to the tip, supporting precise work.
  • Integrated eraser under the end cap: Included and replaceable. For corrections right on the pencil.
  • Clip made from iron, tip and push button from brass: Robust metal components at mechanically stressed points; the clip won't bend under normal use.

Use & Tips

  • Technical drawing and sketching: A 0.3 mm lead produces precise, clean lines without line widening. The Orenz System allows for firmer pressure without risking lead breakage.
  • Dense writing in notebooks: Those who write a lot in tight spaces – marginal notes, corrections, annotations – benefit from the fine lead. On smooth, well-calendered paper, the lead flows particularly cleanly and evenly.
  • Graphite grade: The pencil comes with an HB lead. For finer lines with less grey, switch to H or 2H; for softer, richer shading use B. All standard 0.3 mm leads (e.g. Pentel Super Hi-Polymer) fit.
  • Writing angle matters: The Orenz System works most reliably at an upright writing angle (approximately 50–70° to the paper surface). At very shallow angles – like broad hatching with wooden pencils – the protective sleeve touches the paper before the lead does.
  • Inserting lead: On first filling, press the push button once until the guide sleeve emerges. After that, the pencil writes without further pressing until the lead is used up. To stow, gently press the tip to retract the sleeve.

For Mechanical Pencil Enthusiasts

The Nero model sits at the top of the Orenz range – the difference from simpler Orenz variants lies in the shaft material: the resin-metal composite is injection-moulded or manufactured as a single piece, so the grip zone and shaft have no perceptible seam. The weight of approximately 18 g sits between light plastic and heavy solid metal – enough substance for long writing sessions, light enough for tireless use. The twelve-sided shaft geometry is subtle: not a harsh polygon, but enough structure to prevent rotation. The centre of gravity is deliberately positioned lower than most mechanical pencils, which increases control when drawing precise lines. The brass at the tip and push button ensures that the most heavily stressed mechanical parts develop no play – even after extended use.
