Ystudio Fountain Pen Classic Revolve Portable Brass (M)
The Ystudio Classic Revolve Portable is a fountain pen made of solid brass with a hexagonal body – compact enough for on-the-go use, heavy enough to center in your hand. The Portable version differs from the Deskpen through its shorter barrel length of 138 mm: a fountain pen that fits into a pocket or paperback cover without compromising on writing feel. The nib comes from Schmidt Germany and is Ystudio's first proprietary nib of the Classic series – stamped with the early brand logo, while the body features the current anniversary logo.
Key Features
- Solid brass body, hexagonally milled: The body is crafted from a single piece of brass, with six finely polished edges that stand out as gleaming gold-brass lines from the matte lacquer. This creates a cool, smooth grip surface that balances well in the hand despite its 46 g weight.
- Raw brass surface without protective coating: The brass Portable comes without protective lacquer on the exposed metal. Brass and copper change color through skin contact, humidity, and light – each pen develops its own individual wear pattern. Ystudio includes sandpaper with the pen to selectively remove lacquer areas and either accelerate or customize this effect.
- Schmidt nib (M), stainless steel, gold-plated: The medium nib writes with a medium line width. As a Schmidt nib, it's compatible with the Schmidt converter, which is already included. The nib works with standard International cartridges and converters.
- Pull cap with snap closure: The cap clicks in with a quiet, firm snap. No threads that wear out when capping – an advantage for frequent changes on the go.
Application & Tips
- Ink recommendation: Schmidt recommends inks with medium viscosity. Thin inks can lead to increased ink flow in metal nib systems; thick or heavily pigmented inks can strain the fine nib slit. Water-based fountain pen inks with normal viscosity – including from the LUIBAN range – work reliably. Do not use pigmented inks or iron gall inks without prior testing.
- Paper recommendation: On smooth paper (80–90 g/m²) the medium nib produces a uniform line. Rough or absorbent paper increases ink consumption and can soften the writing image.
- Care of the brass surface: Brass oxidation is non-toxic and can be reversed with a brass polishing cloth if the original metal color is desired. If you want to preserve the wear pattern, simply leave the pen unpolished.
- Posting: The Portable is not designed for posting the cap – placing the cap on the pen end changes the balance and is not structurally intended.
- Filling the converter: With the included Schmidt converter, you can use bottled inks. Turn the converter fully in, dip the nib, draw back slowly – with metal nib systems, a second filling pass helps remove air bubbles.
For Fountain Pen Enthusiasts
The Classic Revolve Portable features Ystudio's proprietary nib – a proprietary development stamped with the early brand logo, while the cap and body display the new logo introduced for the 10th anniversary. The brass material of the body has a density that directly affects hand-holding weight: 46 g without cap means less writing pressure is needed than with lighter plastic pens. The pen is manufactured in Taiwan in local manufactories.
