Uni Kuru Toga Mechanical Pencil 0.5mm
The Kuru Toga by Uni (Mitsubishi Pencil) solves a classic problem of mechanical pencils: the lead wears unevenly during writing, becomes flat and produces a line of varying width. The 3-stage rotation mechanism inside the pencil rotates the lead by approximately 9 degrees with each contact with the paper – automatically and uniformly, without any effort required. The result is a permanently conical tip and a consistently fine, sharp line. Weight approximately 10 g, lead diameter 0.5 mm.
Features
- 3-stage rotation mechanism: A gear train inside the pencil automatically rotates the lead by ~9 degrees with each paper contact. The tip remains conical rather than chisel-shaped – the line width stays consistent throughout your writing session.
- No one-sided flattening: With conventional mechanical pencils, the graphite tip wears on one side and produces an uneven line. The Kuru Toga prevents this by design – not through harder lead, but through continuous rotation.
- Spare eraser under the cap: Beneath the visible eraser sits a second, unused replacement eraser – handy when the first one is used up.
- 0.5 mm lead diameter: Compatible with standard 0.5 mm mechanical pencil leads, such as Uni Nano Dia in HB, B or 2B.
- Lightweight at approximately 10 g: Despite the internal mechanism, the pencil is remarkably light in hand – no fatigue during extended writing or sketching sessions.
- Black body: Simple, matte plastic body in black with a coloured accent at the gear window that makes the rotation mechanism visible.
Use & Tips
- Sketching and technical drawing: Those who make many short strokes – hatching, construction lines, character writing – benefit most from the rotation effect. The mechanism rotates the lead with each lift; the more frequently you lift the pencil, the more evenly the wear distributes.
- Extended writing at school or in the office: Since the lead doesn't need sharpening and the line width remains constant, the Kuru Toga is ideal for sustained note-taking – lectures, meeting notes, forms.
- Calligraphic pencil exercises: For lettering practice where consistent line quality matters, the mechanism prevents the unwanted widening of the line after just a few letters.
- Lead selection: Softer leads (B, 2B) produce richer, darker lines – with the consistent tip, even soft graphite remains controllable. Harder leads (H, 2H) for fine, light construction lines.
- Eraser tip: The spare eraser under the cap can be pulled out and inserted directly when the outer one is used up – no separate eraser needed.
For Mechanical Pencil Enthusiasts
The 3-stage rotation mechanism of the Kuru Toga works purely mechanically via a planetary gear system: when pressed onto the paper, the guide sleeve is pushed slightly upwards, the gear engages and rotates the lead collar by a defined angle – when lifted, the spring returns the guide sleeve. This cycle repeats with each stroke. What sets it apart from simpler rotation systems: the 3-stage gear train converts the linear pressure movement into a controlled rotation of ~9 degrees per stroke, which for a complete rotation (360°) corresponds mathematically to approximately 40 paper contacts. The pencil is compatible with all standard 0.5 mm leads; Uni recommends its own Nano Dia leads, whose graphite-polymer blend is designed for continuous rotation and produces less wear at the lead collar.
