Carta Varese is an Italian colored paper from Florence, whose history dates back to the early 17th century. Originally hand-printed with carved wooden blocks on laid paper, today it is produced using offset printing, with each color applied in a separate print pass. The result: rich, lightfast colors on yellowish, uncoated, acid-free natural paper. This set brings 24 square sheets in 16 × 16 cm format with small flower and blossom motifs, assembled from the Carta Varese range by Carta Pura.

Special Features

  • Uncoated, acid-free natural paper (100 g/m²): The matte, slightly rough surface accepts fold lines clearly and sharply – ideal for boxes, envelopes, and decorative folded forms. The weight gives the sheet enough body so that folded forms retain their structure.
  • Multi-color offset printing, color by color: Each color in the pattern is applied in a separate print pass. This gives the motifs a depth and luminosity that is hardly visible in the printing process – the colors appear saturated, not flat.
  • Small-scale flower and blossom patterns: The motifs follow the design tradition of northern Italian colored papers: densely arranged, ornamental, with a warm color palette from the Florentine printing tradition.
  • 24 sheets mixed from available patterns: The composition varies slightly – no set is exactly like the other. Individual sheets may vary slightly from one another.
  • Paper: Carta Varese, printed in Florence, assembled in Germany: The paper is produced and printed in Italy; the set is assembled in Germany.

Application & Tips

  • Folding boxes and Masu boxes: The 100 g weight makes Carta Varese particularly well-suited for origami forms that require stability – boxes, bags, envelopes. Fold lines are clean and crisp without fraying.
  • Flowers and floral folded forms: Thematically matching the blossom patterns: origami roses, lilies, or lotus flowers unfold an additional effect on this paper when pattern and folded form are coordinated.
  • Bookbinding and book design: Carta Varese is classically suited as covering paper for hand-bound books, albums, and notebooks – the set provides pre-cut sheets that can be used for small projects without further cutting.
  • Collages, cards, and decorative backgrounds: The patterns combine well – as background paper, as backing in frames, or as material for paper-cut collages.
  • Bone folder recommended: With 100 g paper, a bone folder helps create precise edges – especially with multi-layer folded models, where the paper might otherwise warp.

For Origami & Bookbinding Enthusiasts

Carta Varese occupies an interesting niche within origami paper: at 100 g/m², it sits at the upper limit of what is still comfortably workable for structured folded forms – it is deliberately not designed for intricate models with many folds (e.g., complex modular origami). Its strength lies where the paper remains visible: boxes, envelopes, flat decorative forms. The printing process – each color as a separate pass – is reminiscent in logic to screen printing and explains the unusual color saturation for an offset paper. In bookbinding, Carta Varese has long been valued as endpaper and covering material; the pre-cut 16 × 16 cm sheets in this set are a practical starting size for small notebook covers or as endpapers in hand-bound booklets.
