Craft Design Technology Pencils (3 pcs.)
The Craft Design Technology pencils in this 3-piece set are arguably the most iconic product from the Japanese stationery label CDT: hexagonal barrel, mint-green glossy lacquer, silver foil stamping – and a graphite core that produces a consistently dark, smooth line with minimal pressure. Manufactured in Japan, hardness grade HB.
Features
- Mint-green glossy lacquer with silver foil stamping: The lacquer sits rich and smooth on the wooden barrel; the silver foil lettering is positioned precisely, with no bleeding at the letter edges. CDT's mint-green is a brand-signature colour, inspired by traditional Japanese hues.
- Break-resistant, durable graphite (HB): The graphite core is exceptionally resistant to breaking for an HB pencil – important when sharpening with a finely calibrated sharpener or writing under pressure. HB occupies the mid-range of hardness: soft enough for a dark line, hard enough to keep the point sharp for longer.
- Integrated white eraser: A light-coloured eraser sits at the blunt end, flush with the shaft. It erases graphite cleanly without smudging the paper or roughing up the surface.
- Hexagonal cross-section: The six-sided shape prevents the pencil from rolling off angled desk surfaces and sits stably in the hand with three contact points – even during extended writing sessions.
- Supplied unsharpened: The pencils arrive without a factory-ground point. This lets you choose your first sharpening – whether a rounded writing point, a fine drawing point, or an angled edge for calligraphy.
Use & Tips
- Everyday writing and notes: HB is the classic all-rounder hardness for handwritten notes, planning and sketching. The graphite produces a consistent, legible line on standard paper without excessive smudging.
- Bullet journaling and analogue planners: Pencils allow quick corrections without marks – ideal for layouts, timelines and grid drawings that may need adjusting. After erasing, the HB line can be drawn over with ink without graphite residue causing the ink to bead.
- Sketches and draft drawings: HB works well for light underdrawing before ink or watercolour. The lines can be completely removed after overworking without leaving impressions in the paper.
- Sharpener choice: A quality pencil sharpener or knife produces a very clean point with this pencil. For a longer exposed graphite section, pre-sharpen with a knife and then refine the graphite tip with a sharpener.
- Storage: HB graphite pencils should be stored horizontally or with a point protector so the sharpened tip doesn't break. The set's box makes a convenient desk organiser for transport.
For Pencil Enthusiasts
The current CDT pencils are manufactured by Camel Pencil Company in Japan – a producer that also makes pencils for museum shops. The graphite core is engineered for exceptional break and wear resistance, which shows during sharpening: minimal core breakage, even at sharp sharpening angles. The silver foil lettering is applied using intaglio printing and sits flush on the lacquer without perceptible edges. When sharpened with a two-stage hand sharpener, you'll get a point that glides smoothly across even glossy, calendered paper without skipping.
