The bone folder made from cattle bone is one of the oldest tools in bookbinding craft – and to this day, nothing has replaced it completely. 16 cm long, flat-ground, with a pointed and a rounded edge: a tool that sits in your hand like an argument for handwork. When you score and tear cotton rag paper, you create the characteristic, frayed deckle edge that cannot be reproduced by machine.

Use & Tips

• Folding cardboard and paper: Place a ruler, draw a crease along the fold line with the pointed end of the bone folder, then fold the cardboard along the crease and smooth it flat with the rounded side. Thicker paper weights benefit particularly from this method – the fold breaks cleanly without tearing.
• Tearing cotton rag paper: Score a line with the bone folder, then tear the paper along the line against a ruler or tearing edge. The result is the typical deckle edge: soft, fibrous, authentically handmade.
• Bookbinding and sewn binding: When scoring signatures (sections) for bound books, the bone folder ensures that each section breaks sharply and precisely – a prerequisite for an even book block.
• Adhesive and mounting work: The rounded side is also suitable for pressing down and smoothing self-adhesive materials, adhesive tape or laminating film – without air bubbles and without scratching the surface.
• Origami and paper folding: For complex folded models where precise, sharp creases are crucial, the bone folder complements hand folding – particularly with stiffer origami papers.
• Care: The bone folder requires no special care. Occasional cleaning with a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. With very heavy use, the surface can be gently re-polished with fine-grit sandpaper (2000 grit).
