Bookbinder scissors 16 cm
A bookbinder's scissors built to meet the demands of professional bookbinding: 18 cm overall length, nickel-plated metal blades with a wide cutting surface and a bright silver finish. The blade is engineered for even pressure across the entire cutting length – no offset, no material tear-out.
Features
- Wide blade for even cutting: The blade geometry ensures linen, thin board and paper are cleanly severed in one guided motion – without the material shifting sideways or fibres tearing.
- Nickel-plated metal surface: The finish is corrosion-resistant and gives the scissors a smooth, cool feel in the hand. The surface remains grippy after extended use, without becoming sticky.
- Sturdy construction: The scissors are engineered for repeated use with firm materials – multi-ply bookbinding linen or folded paper sheets can be cut without force and without blade flexing.
- Compact 18 cm length: Handy enough for precise work at the bench, with sufficient lever travel for clean long cuts along a ruler or fold line.
- Made in Germany.
Use & Tips
- Cutting bookbinding linen: The wide blade keeps the fabric flat and prevents threads from shifting during the cut. Best used with a metal ruler guide to transfer book cover measurements precisely.
- Board and endpaper: Suitable for thin bookbinding board up to approximately 1–1.5 mm thick. Thicker grey board should be cut with a craft knife and steel ruler – this keeps the scissors sharp long-term.
- Preparing signature binding: When cutting fold sheets and signatures, the scissors' weight keeps them steady in the hand, enabling clean cross-cuts without slipping.
- Removing adhesive residue: Nickel-plated metal is easy to clean with a damp cloth. After working with PVA glue, wipe the blades immediately while the glue is still fresh.
- Maintaining sharpness: Occasional honing with a fine whetstone on the flat side of the blade significantly extends the scissors' lifespan. The scissors are not designed for cutting tape or coated films – this dulls the edge quickly.
For Bookbinding Enthusiasts
In professional bookbinding, blade geometry largely determines how cleanly fabric and paper edges finish. This scissors' wide blade creates a flat cutting angle that compresses material evenly rather than crushing it – the result is a sharply defined edge that leaves no protruding fibres when covering boards. For work with Japanese bookbinding linen or fine endpapers, this makes a noticeable difference compared to narrower general-purpose scissors. The nickel-plated steel construction is manufactured in Germany, making professional resharpening by a specialist straightforward.
