The MD pencil by Midori is available as a set of six in hardness grade B and was developed as a writing instrument for the MD notebook series. The hexagonal wooden shaft made of cedarwood features a matte, cream-colored lacquer finish that is precisely color-matched to the characteristic MD paper – a visually and tactilely coherent ensemble. No eraser, no clip, no distraction: Just graphite, wood, and the page.

Features

• Hardness grade B – soft and expressive: The B lead leaves a rich dark, silky line. On the slightly textured MD paper, it glides with minimal pressure and delivers precise lines for both quick notes and calm sketching.
• Hexagonal shaft made of cedarwood: The classic hexagonal cross-section lies securely between thumb, index, and middle finger. Cedarwood sharpens evenly – the shaving releases cleanly and the lead doesn't break out.
• Matte, cream-colored lacquer finish: The surface feels dry and slightly textured, without sticking. The color matches the light natural tone-gray scheme of the MD series.
• Without eraser: No eraser at the end – this keeps the pencil short, light, and well-balanced in the hand.
• Embossing "MD PAPER PRODUCTS": Subtly embossed in black, clearly legible, without visually overloading the shaft.

Application & Tips

• On MD paper: The slightly coated, smooth MD paper takes the B lead excellently – the graphite deposits evenly and blends well for shading and hatching.
• Free writing and journaling: The soft line and light weight of the pencil invite long, fatigue-free writing – ideal for morning pages, brainstorming, or layout sketches in notebooks.
• Sketching and illustrating: Hardness grade B allows both fine, controlled lines and broad, soft areas through light pressure changes or by holding the pencil at a flatter angle.
• Sharpening: The cedar shaft sharpens evenly in any standard pencil sharpener. A tin sharpener with container is recommended to catch the fine shavings.
• Set combination: Six pencils in the package make it possible to keep multiple pencils sharpened at the same time – one at the desk, one in the notebook, one in the bag.

For Paper Enthusiasts

The Japanese hardness grade B tends to be slightly softer and darker compared to European standards. On ink-resistant, calendered paper, the lead shows its best side: the graphite deposit is even and can be deliberately blended with a finger or blending stump without smudging. Those who write on both sides of an MD notebook page should note that strong pencil pressure on the very smooth MD paper can occasionally leave a slight embossing – with normal writing pressure this is not an issue.
