The MD pencil by Midori is available as a set of six in grade B hardness and was developed as a writing instrument for the MD notebook series. The hexagonal cedarwood shaft features a matte, cream-coloured lacquer finish that is precisely colour-matched to the distinctive MD paper – a visually and tactilely coherent ensemble. No eraser, no clip, no distraction: just graphite, wood and the page.

• Grade B – soft and expressive: The B lead produces a rich, dark, silky line. On the slightly textured MD paper, it glides with minimal pressure and delivers precise strokes whether you're jotting quick notes or sketching thoughtfully.
• Hexagonal cedarwood shaft: The classic hexagonal cross-section sits securely between thumb, index and middle finger. Cedarwood sharpens evenly – the shaving comes away cleanly and the lead won't snap off.
• Matte, cream-coloured lacquer finish: The surface feels dry and subtly textured without sticking. The colour is matched to MD's distinctive warm grey palette.
• No eraser: No rubber end – this keeps the pencil short, light and perfectly balanced in your hand.

• On MD paper: The slightly textured, smooth MD paper takes the B lead beautifully – the graphite deposits evenly and blends excellently for shading and cross-hatching.

For Paper Enthusiasts

Japanese grade B pencils tend to be slightly softer and darker than European standards. On ink-resistant, calendered paper, the lead really shines: the graphite deposits evenly and can be deliberately blended with a finger or blending stump without smudging. If you're writing on both sides of an MD notebook page, note that firm pencil pressure on the very smooth MD paper can occasionally leave a subtle embossed mark – this isn't an issue with normal writing pressure.
