e+m Wooden Ruler Scale 190 natural
The Scale 190 is a solid alder wood ruler with a square cross-section – a 1960s design that has been handcrafted in Germany ever since without alteration. The natural version is oil-treated: the light, open-grain wood surface feels warm and slightly rough, sits comfortably in the hand, and smells of freshly worked wood. 15 cm measuring scale, 16 cm overall length.
Features
- Square cross-section (8 × 8 mm): The four-sided profile prevents the ruler from sliding across the desk while allowing it to sit flush against raised edges – practical when working on thick paper pads, sketchbooks or cardboard.
- Solid alder, oiled: No veneer, no laminate – the cross-section shows solid alder throughout. The oiled surface protects the wood and reveals the natural grain. The surface is textured enough to be guided securely.
- 15 cm measuring scale, single-sided: The scale is clearly and precisely engraved or printed. The 16 cm overall length leaves room for thumb and forefinger without obscuring the scale.
- Compact format: At 16 cm long, the ruler fits into any pencil case, notebook sleeve or jacket pocket – without compromising on usable length.
- Handcrafted in Germany: The Scale has been made in Neumarkt since the 1960s; the design and manufacturing process remain unchanged.
Use & Tips
- Ruling lines in calligraphy sketchbooks: The square cross-section runs stably along thick book blocks – no tilting, no lifting of the edge from the paper.
- Sketch-noting and bullet journaling: The compact length makes the Scale ideal for A5 or A6 formats. The natural wood surface doesn't slide across wet ink but provides grip.
- Desk use: The ruler lies flat on the table and doesn't roll away – thanks to the squared profile. Perfect for those who frequently use a ruler and want it always to hand.
- Pairing with fountain pens: Because the wood edge has no sharp metal rivets or fittings, there are no scratches on fine writing instruments when placed side by side.
For Writing Instrument Enthusiasts
Alder is a medium-hard hardwood with fine, even grain and a light, slightly reddish-beige base colour. The oiled surface of the Scale 190 natural can be re-nourished with a drop of linseed oil if needed – the wood absorbs oil well and remains supple over time. The square profile of 8 × 8 mm is identical to that of the black-stained version; placed side by side, you see the same ruler in two characters: the natural Scale warm and grained, the black one clean and graphic.
