The Hobonichi Techo Cover by Arts&Science in Wax Coating Kip design is a collaboration between Hobonichi and Arts&Science, the brand and retail concept of Sonya Park – who also serves as Creative Director of the English-language Hobonichi Techo Planner. The foundation is thick kip leather (bovine leather) from Japanese vegetable tanning, which is colored only on the surface and subsequently hand-rubbed with beeswax. The wax layer is finally heat-pressed into the leather, which deepens the color and gives the material a dignified, slightly shimmering character.

Special Features

  • Vegetable-tanned kip leather, Japanese tannery: Plant-based tanning produces a dense, firm leather with natural grip – heavier and more durable than goat leather, with noticeably more body when opened.
  • Hand-applied beeswax layer: The wax is applied by hand, allowing for a thicker, more uniform layer than mechanical processes. The result is a matte, dignified finish with slightly waxy feel directly after production.
  • Heat-fixed wax layer: Heat presses the wax deep into the surface – this intensifies the color and gives the leather its characteristic, calm shine.
  • Uncut edges (natural edge): The cut edges of the leather remain raw, making the material thickness visible and giving the cover a handcrafted presence.
  • Leather closure: The cover closes with a strap made from the same kip leather as the outer material, the tab is simply tucked in – a functional solution without a zipper that keeps the book securely closed.
  • Interior pocket with recess: Inside there is a pocket for accessories; a recess at the bottom left accommodates thicker items – business cards, folded notes or a small ruler fit easily.
  • Leather bookmark: The bookmark is made from the same kip leather as the cover and blends in visually seamlessly.
  • Pen-hook: A hook for a pen clip is integrated – works with most common fountain pens and gel pens in standard clip format.
  • White stitching: The contrasting white stitches are a design signature of the Arts&Science collection and highlight the handwork visibly.
  • Embossing: The logos of Arts&Science and Hobonichi are embossed on the interior pocket.
  • Made in Japan: The covers are hand-sewn and assembled in Japan.

Application & Tips

  • Compatible with: The Hobonichi Techo in A6 format (Original and Planner). The book itself is not included.
  • Inserting the book: The Hobonichi block is slid into the cover and the strap closes the cover securely – practical for carry bags since no loose pages can open.
  • Pen choice for pen-hook: The hook holds pens via the clip – ideal for slim fountain pens or gel pens with sturdy clips. Very thick clips may be harder to engage.
  • Wax care: The beeswax nourishes the leather from within. With intensive use, the surface wears to a quieter, silky shimmer – this is not wear but the natural development of the material.
  • Natural grain: Since the leather is only surface-dyed and not dyed throughout, grain pattern, color depth and grain structure vary from piece to piece. Scars or hair growth marks from natural animal life are possible with vegetable-tanned full leather and are a characteristic of the material.
  • Break-in period: Kip leather with wax finish is somewhat stiffer at first. After a few weeks of daily use, it adapts to your hand and opens more softly.

For Leather Enthusiasts

Kip refers to bovine leather from young or small cattle – finer in grain than regular bovine leather, yet more stable and less stretchy than goat leather. Vegetable tanning with tannins from plant extracts produces denser, firmer leather with higher wax absorption capacity than chrome-tanned leather – which is why this type is particularly well-suited for hand-applied wax finishes like this one. Surface coloring without full penetration means: The cut edges show the natural, lighter leather color, which visually emphasizes the raw edge. Over time, the beeswax does not develop a classic patina like untreated full-grain leather – the material remains stable in its basic structure but changes its surface shine depending on wear behavior.
