Hobonichi Cover Glow: Chianti (A5)
The Hobonichi Cover Glow: Chianti is a tri-fold case for the A5 Hobonichi Techo, crafted from smooth Italian cowhide that has been vegetable-tanned and hand-dyed. The deep burgundy tone takes its name from Chianti – the renowned red wine from Tuscany. The surface possesses a silky, cool feel from day one; with continued use, the leather develops a distinctive lustre and natural patina that makes each piece unique. Designed as a long-term companion: minimal design, no unnecessary pockets, instead featuring a snap closure and an interior pen loop.
Features
- Vegetable-tanned Italian cowhide: Vegetable tanning means that tannins from plant sources – rather than synthetic chemicals – are used in the process. This keeps the leather breathable, responsive to hand warmth and humidity, and allows it to develop a distinctive patina over months that chrome-tanned leather cannot achieve.
- Dyeing method for vibrant patina: The surface has been dyed in a way that preserves the leather's natural tanning structure and allows it to continue developing – the Chianti tone deepens over time and gains depth and lustre rather than fading.
- Chianti colour: Rich, dark-red tone with a subtly warm, slightly violet undertone – carefully and deliberately named after Tuscan Sangiovese wine. Neither harsh nor flat, but with natural colour depth created by the interplay of dye and leather texture.
- Tri-fold mechanism with snap closure: The case wraps around the notebook in three sections and remains securely closed with a press-stud – protecting your Techo reliably in your bag without velcro or elastic bands that could strain the leather over time.
- Interior pen loop: The Techo notebook sits inside the case; beside it is a loop that holds a pen in place via its clip. Suitable for slim ballpoints, fine-tip pens or mechanical pencils with standard clips – no additional pen case needed.
- Timeless minimal design: Deliberately free of pockets and extra features, so the design language remains contemporary after years of use and the leather remains the focal point.
Use & Tips
- Breaking in: Fresh from the box, the leather is still stiff and the case may feel quite snug initially. Regular opening and the warmth of your hands will speed up the breaking-in process – after a few weeks it will feel supple and comfortable.
- Developing patina intentionally: Sunlight, hand warmth and occasional conditioning with a colourless leather balm intensify the lustre. If you always carry the case with the same hand, you'll notice how the leather adapts precisely to your grip.
- Pen choice for the loop: The loop holds pens in place via their clip. Slim rollerball pens, fine-tip markers or compact ballpoints with standard clips work particularly well – wider clips or very thick pens can be difficult to grip.
- Compatible Techo notebook: The case is designed for the A5 format (Hobonichi Techo Cousin). The notebook itself is not included and must be purchased separately.
- Care: Vegetable-tanned leather is sensitive to heavy moisture. If it gets wet, gently blot with a dry cloth and allow to air-dry flat – do not use a hair dryer or heater, as this will make the leather brittle.
For Leather Enthusiasts
Vegetable-tanned leather – also known as vegetable tanned leather – undergoes tanning using tannins from tree bark, oak galls or similar plant sources. This process takes considerably longer than industrial chrome tanning, but leaves a fibre structure that absorbs and responds to moisture, pressure and warmth throughout the life of the piece – visibly evident as colour deepening, lustre development and adaptation to hand shape. The dyeing method used for the Chianti Cover is calibrated accordingly: the colour penetrates the leather rather than sitting only on the surface, so scuffs and wear marks complement the patina pattern rather than spoil it. Natural grain variations, fine veining or slight colour differences in the leather are inherent to production and not quality defects – they attest to the authenticity of the natural material and make each cover a unique piece.
