Use & Tips

• Fountain pens: Tomoe River paper showcases ink colours with particular brilliance. Fine to medium nibs (EF to M) work best – broad nibs increase drying time. Quick-drying inks or a blotting paper insert are recommended.
• Fibre-tip pens & gel pens: Water-based fibre-tip pens and pigmented gel pens dry faster than fountain pen ink on Tomoe River. Well-suited for bullet-journalling symbols, drawings and labelling.
• Weekly planning with memo split: The right grid memo page can be divided into zones – for example, upper half for tasks, lower half for a mini-daily log or a quick sketch of the day.
• Habit tracking: The 3.55 mm grid is ideal for small checkboxes and tracking tables, which can be arranged in landscape format on the right page.
• Pocket format in everyday use: At approximately 188 × 94 mm, the Weeks fits into an inside pocket, a belt bag or a slim pouch – without the weight of an A5 planner.
• Cover combination: The book is ready to use as-is, but can also be inserted into compatible Weeks covers to store a pen and additional cards directly with your planner.

The refined Tomoe River paper, in use since the 2024 edition, shows a smoother surface compared to earlier versions thanks to adjusted fibre structure, less show-through and slightly reduced weight with the same sheet thickness – a noticeable difference when writing with fine nibs. Natal Design has worked with vintage workwear aesthetics and classic American outdoor motifs for years; the "Lucky Swallow" motif stands in this visual language for luck and homecoming – a motif rooted in the tattoo and sailor iconography of the early 20th century and today reinterpreted as a graphic print on outdoor clothing and accessories. The Hobonichi Weeks is the first product of this collaboration between Natal Design and Hobonichi Techo.
