The Hobonichi Techo 2027 Original Book is the classic A6 daily planner from Japan – essentially unchanged in its core since 2002, yet thoughtfully crafted in every detail. The book is made from Tomoe River S paper (52 g/m²), printed with a 3.7 mm dot grid pattern that accommodates calligraphy, drawings, collages and handwriting equally well. The Japanese edition follows the original layout with Japanese date notation and quotations.

Features

  • Tomoe River S paper, 52 g/m²: Featherlight yet sturdy – the paper feels cool and smooth, almost slightly crisp. Ink doesn't bleed, nibs glide without resistance. Fountain pen enthusiasts appreciate that shading and sheen can fully express themselves on this surface.
  • One day, one page: Each day gets a complete A6 page – plenty of space for timetables, free notes, sketches or pasted ephemera, without the page feeling cramped.
  • 3.7 mm dot grid: The grid is printed in a subtle, understated tone that provides orientation without imposing itself. Text in various sizes, drawings and table layouts work equally well over it.
  • Thread binding, opens 180°: The book lies completely flat without needing to be held down – both hands remain free for writing or pasting.
  • Rounded page corners: Protect the corners from bending when the book is carried daily in a bag or backpack.
  • Japanese edition: All dates, month names and quotations on the daily pages are in Japanese – the original layout since the first edition in 2002.
  • Monthly and yearly overviews: Monthly calendar, three-year overview and 16-month yearly index complement the daily pages as planning aids.
  • Compatible with all Hobonichi A6 covers: The book is designed without a cover – any A6 Hobonichi cover fits and can be chosen separately.

Use & Tips

  • Fountain pens and ink: Tomoe River S takes fountain pen ink beautifully, though ink dries slower than on standard paper. Use blotting paper or a writing undersheet (Shitajiki) next to the book to protect fresh writing from smudging.
  • Fine to medium nibs: Fine and medium-width nibs produce a particularly precise, rich script on this smooth paper. Stub nibs show line variation distinctly – ideal for calligraphic entries.
  • Pencils and gel rollers: On the smooth paper, a hard pencil (2H–HB) runs cleanly without smudging. Gel rollers with pigmented ink dry faster than fountain pen inks.
  • Washi tape and inserts: The paper handles washi tape well; when removing smooth PET tape, be careful as it can pick up paper fibres.
  • Mind ink saturation: Very wet inks (highly saturated iron gall inks, many shimmer inks) can show through if applied heavily. Test on a memo page before regular use.
  • Use a writing pad: Because the paper is thin, pressure from a ballpoint or hard pencil can transfer to the next page – a thin cardboard or plastic sheet underneath solves this.
  • As a combined diary and sketchbook: The unlined daily page invites mixing text, drawings and stickers – watercolours hold up in thin layers without causing the paper to buckle.

For Planner Enthusiasts

The Tomoe River S paper in the 2027 Techo has been continuously produced by Sanzen since 2025 – the manufacturer that took over production after Tomoegawa ceased in 2021. The paper weighs 52 g/m², feels slightly smoother compared to previous years' editions, marginally firmer, and shows less ghosting than the 2025 batch. Ink show-through (ghosting) from the reverse side is visible with most inks, but it's not bleeding through – a characteristic feature of this thin paper that many users consciously use as an orientation aid for the reverse side. The daily page grid measures 3.7 mm; the monthly calendar pages use a slightly closer grid of 3.45 mm.
