The Hobonichi 5-Year Techo Japanese Book (A5) spans five calendar years – from January 2027 to December 2031 – in a single bound volume. The layout presents the same date from all five years side by side on each spread, so entries from previous years remain visible next to the current day. The paper is Tomoe River S: 52 g/m², cream-coloured, printed with 3.7 mm grid. The binding is thread-stitch, allowing the book to lie completely flat – without resistance.
Features
- Five-year layout: The left page of each spread shows the same date across five lines – one per year. The right page is laid out as free grid paper, offering additional space for notes, sketches or stickers.
- A5 format with 352 squares per day: The generous page size allows each year's entry to be written out in detail – flowing text, small drawings or mixed layouts are all possible.
- Tomoe River S Paper, 52 g/m²: The paper resists bleed-through despite its low weight. The smooth, slightly creamy surface accepts ink with minimal resistance and showcases pronounced shading and sheen with many fountain pens.
- Thread-stitch binding: The book lies completely flat, even in the centre. Pages remain in position without being held – practical for writing at a desk or on the move.
- Cream-coloured paper, anthracite-grey print: The low-contrast grid print lets your handwriting shine without visually cluttering the page.
- Textured brown cover with year printed in gold foil: The cover has a pleasant tactile finish and feels good in the hand; the gold foil makes the book complete without a separate sleeve.
- Dark ribbon bookmark: Included with the book and colour-coordinated with the cover.
- Supplementary material in Japanese: Annual calendars 2027–2031, year-per-page memo pages, gift register, address pages, lists and note sections – all in Japanese.
Use & Tips
- Five-year daily journal: The single-line daily entry per year works well for a brief sentence, a keyword or a sketch. If you write only a little each day, you'll still fill the entry completely – the five-year comparison of the same dates emerges naturally.
- Testing fountain pens and inks: Tomoe River S produces particularly vibrant results with shading-rich inks (many iron-gall or dye-based inks). Before first use, it's worth testing ink and nib on the memo pages at the back of the book – drying time and show-through vary depending on the ink and nib width.
- Fountain pens with fine to medium nibs: On 52 g/m² Tomoe River S paper, fine and medium nibs produce precise lines; with very broad nibs or wet inks, drying time may be longer. A writing underlay (pencil board / shitajiki) protects the next page from impressions.
- Gel rollers and ballpoint pens: Both write smoothly on the glossy paper and dry reliably. Suitable for both right-handed and left-handed writers.
- Collage and mixed media: The right page of the spread is unstructured – ideal for glued-in tickets, photographs, drawings or light watercolour sketches. Heavy moisture will ripple the thin paper.
- Choose a cover separately: The 5-Year Techo A5 does not fit standard annual covers for the regular A5 Hobonichi Techo. Dedicated 5-Year covers are available to accommodate the thicker book format.
For Tomoe River Enthusiasts
Since 2025, all Hobonichi Techo books use Tomoe River S, produced by Sanzen – the successor to the original Tomoegawa production. The paper is pH-neutral and therefore archive-stable: entries will not yellow prematurely. The characteristic smoothness results from a calendering process that densifies the fibres without adding fillers – this makes the paper respond particularly vividly to dye-rich inks. Every Hobonichi Techo bears a unique serial number on its final page as a mark of authenticity.
