The Hobonichi writing pad for the Weeks calendar depicts a scene from Tove Jansson's novel "Comet in Moominvalley": a magnificent ballroom in which small water sprites, creeping plant spirits and tree spirits celebrate together. The board is made of synthetic Yupo paper – smooth, light and pleasantly firm to hold. Both the front and back feature their own illustration of this dance scene.

Special Features

  • Perfect fit for the Hobonichi Weeks: The writing pad is precisely matched to the page format of the Weeks calendar (187 × 88 mm). When placed under the current page, it provides an evenly firm, slightly elastic writing surface – particularly noticeable when writing with fine tips or thin ballpoint pen refills.
  • Protection against show-through: The stable Yupo layer prevents ballpoint pens, fineliners or pencils from bleeding through to the pages below – a noticeable difference, especially with thinly printed Tomoe River paper.
  • "Today" tab as bookmark: The imprint in the corner marks the current page when the board is tucked between the calendar pages – no need to search for today's date.
  • Millimeter scale on the back: The back edge features a 1 mm grid and serves as a practical short ruler for quick measurements right at your desk.
  • Illustrated on both sides: The front shows the grand ball with the tiny forest spirits and water sprites from the novel; the back shows the dancing figures in the ballroom – both designs based on Tove Jansson's original illustrations.
  • Yupo material: Synthetic paper made from polypropylene – water-resistant, tear-resistant, and at just 7 g so light that it's barely noticeable in the calendar.

Use & Tips

  • Simply slide the board under the current week view of the Weeks. The "Today" tab sticks out the top of the book, making it easy to open to the right page with one hand.
  • Those who prefer writing with pencil or soft leads will benefit especially: Yupo barely flexes and produces even line weight without transferring to the next page.
  • The millimeter scale on the back edge is perfect for quick length measurements, margin markings, or measuring small pieces of washi tape directly while planning.
  • Since the board is not dated for a specific year, it can be reused from one calendar year to the next.
  • Yupo is water-resistant – ink from a fineliner or ballpoint pen that accidentally gets on the board can simply be wiped off.

For Moomin & Hobonichi Enthusiasts

The illustration captures one of the most atmospheric scenes from "Comet in Moominvalley" (original title: Kometjakten, 1946): the nighttime celebration in the forest, where Tove Jansson gathers an entire gallery of small creatures – water sprites, tree spirits and creeping plant spirits – who dance until early morning.
