The Ferrule is a pencil holder crafted from solid brass with a finely brushed finish – manufactured by Makers Cabinet in Britain. At its core is a collet mechanism borrowed from mechanical engineering: simply twist the grip section to open and close the brass collet, which holds the pencil securely in place. The set comes with six cedar wood pencils by Kitaboshi (Japan) and three retractable TPU erasers.

Features

  • Collet mechanism from mechanical engineering: The grip section rotates to open and close – a click signals secure seating. The mechanism accommodates pencils with 7–8 mm diameter, encompassing standard pencils as well as charcoal, pastel and coloured pencils in common formats.
  • Solid brass and stainless steel: The body is CNC-machined from a single piece of brass, with the surface radially brushed. Brass develops a natural patina over time; those preferring a more uniform finish can polish the metal with a suitable brass polish to a high shine.
  • Removable stainless steel clip: The clip grips firmly enough for shirt pockets or notebook spines. By unscrewing the eraser section, it can be completely removed – the Ferrule becomes a compact, clip-free form.
  • Three retractable TPU erasers (25 mm): The eraser system is designed so the rubber can be advanced – similar to a mechanical pencil. TPU rubber erases cleanly and leaves minimal residue on paper.
  • Six Kitaboshi cedar wood pencils included: Three HB and three 2B, manufactured in Japan. Cedar wood sharpens evenly and without splintering with a standard sharpener.
  • Packaging fully recyclable: Paper-based, with no plastic components.

Use & Tips

  • Use your pencil to the end: The Ferrule grips even very short pencils, as long as their diameter falls within the 7–8 mm range. This lets you use up stub ends completely – pieces that would be uncomfortable to hold in your fingers alone.
  • Changing pencils: Rotate the grip section anticlockwise, remove the old pencil, insert the new one, then rotate the grip section clockwise until it clicks. The process requires no tools.
  • Drawing and sketching: The included 2B Kitaboshi pencils are ideal for soft lines, hatching and shading. The HB selection covers more precise line work and handwriting.
  • Desk and transport: Attach via clip to your notebook spine or shirt pocket. Without the clip, the round top paired with the hexagonal grip section sits comfortably in your hand and won't roll across your desk.
  • Care: The brushed brass surface changes over time through contact with fingers. To keep the patina uniform, occasionally wipe the body with a soft cloth.

For Pencil Enthusiasts

Kitaboshi is among the last active pencil manufacturers in Tokyo and has produced wooden pencils since 1944. The incense cedar used for the Ferrule is an aromatic, fine-grained wood that sharpens exceptionally evenly and releases a distinctive aroma when sharpened. Japanese pencil leads are typically considered somewhat softer and darker than their grade designation might suggest compared to European equivalents – an HB feels closer to a European B in writing. The Ferrule's hexagonal grip section echoes this classic pencil geometry: six facets distribute finger pressure evenly and give the holder a defined rotational position in your hand.
