Hibi brings together two craft traditions from Japan's Hyogo Prefecture: the incense sticks of Awaji Island and the match-making heritage of Harima. The result is an incense stick that ignites like a match – no lighter, no separate fire-starting tool needed. The lemongrass version carries the fresh, slightly herbaceous scent of lemongrass, which lingers in the room for approximately ten minutes.

Use & Tips

• Light the stick against the striking surface on the side of the box, let it burn briefly, then extinguish the flame by gently shaking or blowing – the stick will continue to glow.
• Place the supplied pad on a solid, heat-resistant surface. Lay the stick with the glowing end on the pad; it does not stand upright but lies flat – this is the intended design for Hibi.
• Lemongrass scent harmonises well with quiet working or writing moments: the clear, lively aroma maintains concentration without overwhelming.
• For enclosed spaces of 10–20 m², one stick is well-dosed. In very large or well-ventilated rooms, the fragrance will be correspondingly more subtle.
• Never leave burning unattended and maintain sufficient distance from paper, books and other flammable materials.

For Incense Culture Enthusiasts

Hibi emerged from a deliberate collaboration between incense stick manufacturers on Awaji Island – one of the centres of Japanese senkō production – and match makers from the Harima region, both based in Hyogo Prefecture. The technical challenge lay in combining the striking compound of a match head with the incense compound of a senkō stick in a way that both functions work reliably. The handcrafted process allows the precision needed for layering the friction medium and incense paste that machine manufacturing has not yet achieved at this level of refinement.
