Hibi brings together two craft traditions from Japan's Hyogo Prefecture: the incense sticks of Awaji Island and matchstick manufacturing from Harima. The result is an incense stick that lights like a match – no lighter, no holder, no accessories needed. Each stick burns for around ten minutes and releases the warm, deep scent of ambergris, one of the oldest and most complex fragrance notes in the perfumery tradition.

• Light like a match: Ignite the incense stick on the striking surface of the box, wait briefly until the flame extinguishes – then it glows for approximately ten minutes. No holder required.

• Included base pad: Each box contains a fireproof foam pad in an aluminium-lined inner compartment. Place the glowing stick on the pad after lighting – the surface beneath remains untouched.
• Handcrafted in Japan: Every stick is made in traditional handwork, with quality evident in the even density and clean burn.
• Compact packaging: The flat cardboard box (57 × 56 × 9 mm) fits into a desk drawer, on a windowsill or in a bag.

Use & Tips

• Light the stick on the side striking surface of the box – similar to a match, but with slightly more pressure and a steady stroke. The flame ignites briefly and extinguishes on its own.
• Place the glowing stick immediately on the included base pad. The foam is fireproof and absorbs heat and any ash that falls.
• For closed or lightly ventilated rooms: In a well-ventilated space, the scent dissipates quickly; in a quieter room atmosphere, ambergris unfolds its full, lasting depth.

Ambergris as a fragrance note has no historical connection to incense – it is a maritime, animal substance that has been used in perfumery for centuries as a fixative: it gives other fragrances lasting power and depth. In hibi sticks, the character of this fragrance note is translated into natural incense ingredients. The result doesn't smell sweetly floral or resinous-woody, but rather has an unusually dense, almost mineral quality – calm, heavy and very persistent in its aftertaste. Hibi was developed as a collaboration between the time-honoured matchstick manufacturer Daihatsu Matchstick and the incense stick manufactory Kunjudo – both based in Hyogo Prefecture.
