Papier d'Arménie is incense paper infused with benzoin resin – the resin of the Styrax tree – handcrafted since 1885 in Montrouge, south of Paris, using an unchanged recipe. The classic booklet contains 36 perforated strips from 12 sheets with 3 strips each, which release a spicy, balsamic frankincense fragrance when smouldering. In the fragrance bath, styrax resin, frankincense resin and additional secret ingredients combine – their exact composition is a closely guarded company secret passed down through generations. The classic fragrance profile carries subtle vanilla undertones and a soft, resinous Oriental aroma.

Features

  • Benzoin resin as active ingredient: The paper is infused in a solution of styrax resin (from Laos), frankincense resin, vanilla and further essences – the benzoin content of approximately 25% benzoic acid gives the smoke its odour-neutralising effect.
  • Dual action: When smouldering, a single strip perfumes an entire room whilst simultaneously neutralising odours from the kitchen, tobacco or pets. The paper can also be used unlit as a passive fragrance dispenser in drawers, wardrobes or between books.
  • Classic fragrance note: The traditional variant combines smoky resin notes with a soft vanilla undertone – grounding and warm, without being intrusive.
  • Traditional manufacturing: The resin solution macerated for three months in tanks before the paper is infused, dipped in salt solution (which later slows down the burn rate), dried, pressed and finally cut and perforated.
  • 36 strips per booklet: 12 sheets with 3 detachable strips each – each individual strip is sufficient for complete room application.

Use & Tips

  • Accordion folding technique: Detach a strip along the perforated line and fold it in a zigzag pattern like a concertina. The more folds, the slower the paper smoulders – and the more intensely the aroma unfolds.
  • Lighting with a match: Wait a moment for the match flame to settle, then carefully light a corner of the folded strip. Blow out any flame immediately – the paper should only smoulder, not burn. A lighter will cause the paper to burn too quickly.
  • Heat-resistant base: Place the smouldering strip on a plate, incense dish or other heat-resistant surface. Never leave the paper unattended.
  • Passive use without flame: Individual strips can be placed unlit in linen cupboards, chests of drawers, drawers or between book pages. They release a subtle, sweetly balsamic fragrance there over an extended period.
  • Don't forget to ventilate: After use, ventilate the room briefly – this applies in general to all incense applications with natural materials.

For Incense Enthusiasts

The odour-neutralising effect of Papier d'Arménie is attributed to the benzoic acid content in the styrax resin – benzoin has traditionally been used in the manufacture of frankincense as well. The manufacturing process is elaborate: benzoin only fully dissolves in 90° alcohol after two months of maceration; the paper is then dipped in salt solution before the fragrance bath, which later enables controlled smouldering rather than uncontrolled burning. The entire process from the fragrance bath to the finished, perforated booklet takes up to six months.
