The KUM Meisterwerk is a handcrafted long-cone sharpener made from milled magnesium – designed for pencils with an 8 mm diameter and a two-phase process that produces an exceptionally long, precise graphite tip. For anyone working with a quality wooden pencil and wanting to get the most out of their sharpened point, this is a tool equal to the task. The sharpener includes two replacement blades housed directly in the body.

Special Features

  • Two-phase sharpening: Phase 1 removes only the wood – with the TC system (Thin Cut) producing particularly thin shavings to avoid stressing the lead. Phase 2 sharpens and shapes the exposed lead into a long cone with approximately 8-degree cone angle (equivalent to roughly 16° point angle). The result is one of the finest and longest points a hand sharpener can produce.
  • Milled magnesium body: The body is milled from a block of magnesium – cool, matte feel in hand, noticeably heavier than cast versions. The visible milling grooves are evidence of subtractive manufacturing, not a cast part.
  • Blue plastic stop (adjustable): The blue stop on Phase 2 automatically halts the sharpening process before the lead is exposed too far. It can be removed from the body to expose more graphite – for cross-hatching, shading, or drawing techniques that require a cylindrical lead section.
  • Two replacement blades included: The blades are seated in the back of the stop and are always within reach. Replacement is performed with a Phillips head screwdriver.
  • Material requirements: The process requires a centered lead and superior wood quality. Inexpensive pencils with eccentric lead or hard, splintery wood will not deliver reliable results – a quality filter that also defines the sharpener's purpose.
  • Handcrafted in Germany: KUM manufactures in Erlangen – the Meisterwerk is one of the most elaborate products in the KUM range.

Application & Tips

  • Follow the sequence: Always complete Phase 1 fully until the pencil spins freely in the hole and no more shavings fall – only then Phase 2. Skipping the sequence risks breaking the lead.
  • Pencil quality decides: Cedar wood pencils with centered graphite lead – such as Mitsubishi Hi-Uni or comparable quality pencils – deliver the best results: a continuous, spiral shaving and a break-free point.
  • Remove stop for artists: Without the blue stopper, the lead can be exposed further than standard. Those who use the pencil for flat cross-hatching or building up areas benefit from the longer cylindrical graphite zone.
  • Keep the blade sharp: A dull blade tears the lead instead of cutting it cleanly. With regular use, blade replacement is worthwhile much sooner than expected – the included replacement blades are there for this purpose.
  • Transport: The Meisterwerk comes with a neoprene pouch that also protects during travel.

For Pencil Enthusiasts

The measured point angle of the Meisterwerk is approximately 16° – significantly sharper than the 19° of typical long-cone sharpeners and well below the 22° of a standard sharpener. This is made possible by separating both sharpening phases into two geometrically different holes: the second hole has a smaller diameter than comparable two-phase sharpeners, which forces the steeper cone. The so-called "Dynamic Torsion Action" of KUM blades describes a slight curvature of the blade counter to the screw force – this is intended to prevent the pencil tip from breaking off during the final, thinnest part of the sharpening process. The blade hardness is 62 HRC. The body is milled substractively, not die-cast – this explains both the groove structure on the surface and the price point.
