KUM Watercolor Brush Faded Round #6
The KUM Faded Round Brush #6 is a completely hand-crafted watercolor brush made from a blend of two high-tech synthetic fibers – produced in Germany, designed for modern watercolor use. The fiber system combines extremely high water and color absorption capacity with targeted resilience: the brush feels noticeably lively in the hand, releases color evenly and controlled, and reliably returns to its perfect pointed shape after every stroke. The hardness is deliberately designed as "Medium-Soft" – softer and more relaxed than a classic Kolinsky-imitation brush, but with more body and control than a purely soft wash instrument.
Highlights
- Two-Fiber System: The softer fiber consists of a blend of different fiber diameters – this enables extremely high water and color storage capacity as well as even, streak-free color release on paper.
- Thermally hardened support fiber: The stiffer of the two fibers is stabilized through a special hardening process. It provides the elasticity and resilience that enable precise brush control and clean stroke endings.
- Medium-Soft hardness grade: Positioned exactly between very soft wash brushes and harder Kolinsky imitations – open to loose, flowing painting styles while remaining controllable enough for details and contours.
- Perfectly formed round point: The tip tapers finely and maintains its shape even after intensive use, making both area work and delicate line work possible with the same brush.
- Matte black handle: The matte-lacquered wooden grip lies cool and light in the hand, without gloss or slipping.
- 100% hand-crafted in Germany: Every brush is handmade – fiber bundles, ferrule, and handle are assembled and inspected in Germany.
Application & Tips
- Universal all-rounder in size 6: With the finely tapered tip, both medium areas and thin lines and small details can be realized in a single brush – a classic first or only working brush for a session.
- Botanical motifs and floral watercolors: The combination of fine tip and elastic fiber enables flower petals, curved leaf shapes, and stems in fluid motion – pressure for width, release for contour.
- Wet-in-Wet technique: The high capacity of the fiber bundle holds enough water and pigment to paint into wet backgrounds without immediately needing to reload – ideal for soft color transitions and atmospheric backgrounds.
- Loose urban illustration: Size 6 is suitable for spontaneous architectural sketches: window frames, brick structures, shadows – the brush's spring provides enough resistance for controlled angular forms.
- Care: Synthetic fibers are easier to clean than natural hair; after use, rinse the brush in lukewarm water and dry lying flat or hanging, never store standing point-down.
For Watercolor Enthusiasts
In developing the Faded series, KUM deliberately did not focus on imitating natural hair as closely as possible. Instead, the requirements of watercolor artists took center stage: the result is a fiber composition that behaves neither like a pure wash instrument nor like a classic memory-point brush, but brings its own distinctive character. The stiffer fiber is thermally hardened – not a chemical additive, but a physical process that permanently stabilizes the fiber's elasticity. In practice, this means: the brush "presses" cleanly through when it hits the paper without floating away, and immediately returns to its original shape when lifted. This makes it particularly reliable for quick, decisive brush strokes – a behavior that purely soft brushes cannot provide.
