KUM Watercolor Brush Faded Flat #6
The KUM Faded Flat is a flat brush made from two different high-tech synthetic fibers – in size 6 wide enough for swift area work, yet precise enough for clearly defined edges. It is handcrafted entirely in Germany, with a matte black handle that lies comfortably in the hand. Hardness grade Medium-Soft: soft enough for transparent watercolor glazes, with noticeable spring-back.
Special Features
- Two-fiber construction: The softer of the two fibers consists of a blend of different fiber diameters – this increases water and pigment retention capacity and ensures uniform, streak-free color release. The stiffer fiber is stabilized through a special hardening process during manufacturing, giving the brush its elasticity and shape stability.
- Flat brush shape size 6: The straight hair edge allows for clean, angular finishes in a single stroke. Size 6 is wide enough for continuous areas without losing control over edges.
- Hardness grade Medium-Soft: The brush gives slightly when pressed but reliably returns to its shape – this provides control over brush width and pressure variation without the hair buckling.
- Matte black handle: Secure grip with a pleasantly smooth surface – easy to hold even with wet hands. The restrained design doesn't distract from painting.
- Handmade in Germany: Every brush is individually handcrafted – this includes hair binding, ferrule insertion, and brush tip inspection.
- Purely synthetic, vegan: No animal hair, no kolinsky imitation as a goal – instead, the fiber was developed for the actual requirements of modern watercolor painting.
Application & Tips
- Architecture and urban illustrations: The flat hair edge is ideal for painting window panes, masonry, roof edges and other straight structures – place edge, push, done.
- Glazes and color fields: With the wide side, uniform color layers can be applied without streaks – particularly effective with wet-on-wet techniques using plenty of water thanks to the high storage capacity.
- Negative painting: The sharply defined edge of the flat allows you to isolate shapes by working around them – particularly precise when the brush is guided sideways.
- Dry brush technique: With only slightly moistened brush and little paint, structured, lightly torn strokes are created – for textures like wood, stone or grass.
- Brush lettering with flat brushes: The flat brush can be used for broad calligraphy strokes. Sideways guidance creates narrow upstrokes, full width creates broad downstrokes.
- Care: After use, rinse with clean water, stroke the hair into shape and let dry lying down or hanging – do not store standing on the brush tip.
For Watercolor Enthusiasts
The Faded was not developed as an imitation of kolinsky hair, but independently conceived based on artist requirements. The combination of a soft fiber with varying fiber diameters and a support fiber hardened through heat treatment results in a brush with specific characteristics: very high liquid reserve, but clearly noticeable spring-back – the behavior lies between a classic squirrel hair dagger and a firm synthetic brush. For artists who often have to choose between too much softness collapse and insufficient storage capacity in flat brushes, this construction offers a different starting point.
