The KUM Faded French mop brush in size 6 is a watercolour brush with an unusual combination of belly, tip and length: it brings together the storage capacity of a wash brush with the line control of a mop brush and the tip of a round brush. The fibres are made from a blend of two different high-tech synthetic materials – entirely handmade in Germany. The matt black handle keeps the aesthetic clean and timeless.

Features

  • Two-fibre blend for storage capacity and control: The softer fibre consists of varying fibre diameters – this creates a capillary network that absorbs water and paint in large quantities and releases them evenly onto the painting surface. Ideal for seamless gradations without paint streaking.
  • Stiffer fibre stabilised with hardening process: The firmer component gives the brush bounce and elasticity, so the shape remains controlled after each stroke – even with heavy, forceful application.
  • Mop shape with rounded belly: The elongated, rounded form enables long, even strokes – washes, skies, backgrounds and transitions are created with just a few brush movements. The tip still allows for setting accents and loose lines.
  • Medium-Soft hardness grade: Soft enough for liquid watercolour paint, firm enough for controlled paint flow – works reliably with watercolour in both pan and tube form as well as with liquid ink.
  • 100 % handmade in Germany: Each brush is hand-tied in Erlangen – visible in the even fibre distribution and neat setting.
  • Matt black handle: The cool, grippy finish sits securely in the hand, even when fingers are damp.

Use & Tips

  • Backgrounds wet-on-wet: Dampen the paper over a large area with water first, then allow colour to flow in with the fully saturated mop brush – the belly releases the medium in a controlled and even manner without creating streaks.
  • Long lines and structures: Holding the brush at the base of the handle with light pressure creates very long, even strokes – perfect for horizon lines, water surfaces, walls or architectural structures.
  • Loose, botanical motifs: Varying pressure allows you to render leaves, branches and soft plant forms directly with this brush, without needing to switch between a wash brush and a detail brush.
  • Large areas and colour fields: Suitable as the first brush in your sequence: build up colour areas, establish transitions, set the overall mood – then refine with smaller brushes.
  • Care: After use, rinse thoroughly under lukewarm water and allow the fibres to dry in their natural shape, tip pointing upwards.

For Watercolour Enthusiasts

The Faded series from KUM employs a two-component fibre system that is unusual for synthetic brushes in this combination: the capillary action of the soft fibre with variable diameters assumes the role that the hollow structure of Kolinsky hair plays in natural hair brushes – paint absorption occurs through the entire network, not through individual hollow hairs. This makes the Faded brushes lower-maintenance and more shape-stable than natural hair brushes, without losing the smooth paint release. The French mop in size 6 is the mid-range size in this form: large enough for complete backgrounds on A5 paper, compact enough for floral arrangements and loosely painted interiors.
