The Muse Aquarelle Ring Book Lamp Light in size SM is a spiral-bound sketchbook made from 100% cotton paper, developed in Japan. The paper features a slightly creamy, warm white base tone and a finely textured surface with uniform, perceptible grain. With 300 g/m² it accommodates multiple wet layers without warping significantly – completely without pre-stretching.

Special Features

  • 100% cotton, 300 g/m²: Cotton fibers absorb watercolor more gently than wood pulp paper. Pigments distribute more evenly, wet glazing flows more controllably, and thanks to the high weight, the sheet maintains its shape even with multiple wet layers.
  • Warm white as a base: The creamy tone of the Lamp Light paper makes warm colors – ochre, sienna, umber – shine particularly brightly and gives the overall image a harmonious light atmosphere.
  • Slow pigment fixation: The paper is designed for delayed fixation: color remains moveable briefly after application. Wet corrections, lifting with a slightly damp brush, and softening edges can be deliberately applied.
  • Pigment on the surface: The cotton structure holds the pigment close to the fiber rather than absorbing it deeply – flows, blooms, and granulation can be actively controlled and appear more pronounced.
  • Spiral binding with triangular perforation line: Each sheet can be cleanly and straightforwardly removed along the triangular perforation – no frayed edges, no tearing.
  • Compact SM format: 227 × 158 mm – handy for on the go, large enough for developed studies. The spiral wraps completely around, allowing the book to lie flat on the surface.

Application & Tips

  • Wet glazing and lifting: The slow fixation speed makes this paper particularly suitable for techniques where pigment is deliberately lifted again. A dry brush or tissue lifts color cleanly as long as the layer hasn't completely dried.
  • Granulating colors: Colors such as ultramarine, hematite, or naphthol develop particularly pronounced granulation on this surface – the particles have time to settle in the fiber valleys.
  • Masking fluid: After complete drying, masking fluid can be cleanly removed without tearing the surface – the cotton fiber yields without fraying.
  • Mixed techniques: The finely textured surface provides enough tooth for pastel and colored pencils. Watercolor as underpainting followed by pastel or colored pencil application works very well on this paper.
  • Plein-air and travel: The SM format fits into any larger bag. The spiral wraps completely around when turning pages – no open book that tips over on the surface.
  • Single sheet presentation: Thanks to the perforation line, finished works can be cleanly removed, framed, or placed in a portfolio.

For Watercolor Enthusiasts

The Lamp Light paper belongs to the category of so-called "slow-sizing" cotton papers: the surface sizing is calibrated so that pigment is held at the fiber rather than quickly migrating to the depths. This directly affects granulation – granulating pigments show particularly pronounced texture on this surface because the particles have time to settle in the fiber valleys before the layer is fixed. The warm white base tone is no coincidence: the Lamp Light concept is designed to enhance the light effect of warm color temperatures – those working with yellows, oranges, or earthy tones will immediately feel the difference compared to neutral white in the color harmony. At 300 g/m² cotton, the sheet is dimensionally stable enough for multiple wet layers without pre-stretching.
