Hobonichi Notebook lined A6

The Hobonichi Notebook ruled in A6 is a completely flat-opening notebook with 240 pages on acid-free Tomoe River paper, thread-bound and just 8 mm thin. The line pattern was developed by Prof. Haruo Hibino and his team at Chiba University based on design psychology – a pattern patented since 2020 that actively relieves eye strain during long writing sessions. The A6 format corresponds exactly to the Hobonichi Techo Original and fits into every Techo cover case.

Features

• Patented line design (2020): The horizontal lines are interrupted by short vertical lines, creating a subtle grid. Through an optical effect, the eye still perceives continuous lines – the result is a visually calm, fatigue-resistant script, even during long writing sessions.
• Tomoe River paper, 52 g/m²: Extremely thin yet opaque paper with a smooth, slightly cool surface. Ink sits richly, doesn't bleed through, and displays particularly vibrant shading and sheen on this paper. Despite the low weight, the reverse side barely shows through.
• Thread binding with flat opening: The notebook lies completely flat on the table – both sides of a spread can be used simultaneously without pressing down or folding the book.
• Just 8 mm thick with 240 pages: The light paper weight enables a handy thickness that fits easily into any bag and can be used in Techo cover cases in A6 format.
• Acid-free paper: Suitable for long-term archiving – notes, drawings and ink entries remain stable even after decades.

Use & Tips

• Fountain pens and water-based inks: Tomoe River paper responds very well to fine and medium nibs – ink dries slower than on coated paper, but displays exceptional shading in return. Stub nibs amplify this effect even further. Before using a new ink, a brief test on the back pages is recommended, as some free-flowing inks or very wet nibs can cause show-through.
• Quick-drying refills and ballpoint pens: Oil-based ballpoint refills and quick-drying gel refills work perfectly on Tomoe River paper without waiting time.
• Pencil and fineliner: Both glide smoothly and precisely across the smooth surface – ideal for clean sketches, diagrams or small hand-lettering elements between text blocks.
• Combination with Hobonichi Techo Avec: The notebook works wonderfully as a companion to the Hobonichi Techo Avec – same thickness, same format, fits in the same cover.
• Long-term archiving: Those who wish to permanently preserve diaries, travel notes or journal entries benefit from the acid-free paper, which prevents yellowing and deterioration in the long term.

The line design of this notebook is based on research work by Prof. Haruo Hibino and the BB STONE Design Psychology Unit, a spin-off of Chiba University's Faculty of Engineering. The pattern – horizontal lines interrupted by short vertical segments – was patented in 2020. The brain completes the interruptions as continuous lines (optical illusion), whilst the finer grid reduces visual strain when reading and writing. The line spacing has been reduced to 6 mm compared to the larger Hobonichi Note to suit the A6 format. The Tomoe River paper used is the variant specially developed for Hobonichi planners: particularly smooth surface, pronounced ink transparency and high opacity despite 52 g/m² – properties that make ink sheen and colour gradients more visible on this paper than on most other thin writing papers.
