Hobonichi Notebook blank A6
The Hobonichi blank notebook in A6 is a notebook based on Tomoe River paper – 52 g/m², acid-free, thread-bound. It is identical in size but slimmer than the Hobonichi Techo Original and therefore fits into every Techo cover. The surface is silky smooth, the interior completely blank – freedom for sketches, layouts, quick thoughts or free writing.
Special Features
- Tomoe River paper, 52 g/m², blank: The extraordinarily smooth, slightly cool surface lets writing pens of all widths – from fine EF to broad nib – glide effortlessly. Inks shine in full color, with shading and shimmer. The paper is not document-archival.
- High opacity despite 52 g/m²: The special two-sided coating significantly minimizes show-through from the back, so both sides of a sheet can be used well – even with wet or pigmented inks.
- Robust thread binding: The notebook opens flat and stays open – when writing on the left or right page, the spine doesn't press against your hand.
- 240 pages in just 8 mm thickness: The light paper weight makes it possible to build a full-fledged notebook in pocket-sized format – handy, light, yet designed for extended periods of use.
- Acid-free and archival-safe: The paper ages without yellowing and remains stable long-term – the notebook is suitable for archiving over decades.
- Compatible with Hobonichi Techo covers: Format and thickness exactly match the Hobonichi Techo Original (A6), so this notebook fits into all A6 Techo covers – also combinable with the Hobonichi Techo Avec.
Application & Tips
- Fountain pens: Tomoe River is optimized for fountain pens. Fine to medium nibs produce razor-sharp lines; broad and flex nibs show the full shading of the ink. Wet-running pens or inks with high water content need a bit more drying time – a short pause after writing or a blotter sheet helps.
- Gel rollers and fineliners: Work well. Quick-drying formulations are particularly pleasant on Tomoe River because the paper absorbs little ink and the color remains intense.
- Pencil and ballpoint pen: Also work without problems. The smooth surface produces uniform, clean handwriting.
- Sketches and layouts: The blank format is suitable for grid layouts, bullet journal spreads, storyboards and illustrations. The thin paper allows lightbox tracing well.
- Left-handers: With very wet inks, there is increased smudging risk – fast-drying inks or short pauses significantly reduce this risk.
- As a supplementary notebook for the Hobonichi Techo Avec: The A6 format fits exactly; the notebook serves as a blank extension for the calendar and can be carried together in one cover.
For Paper Enthusiasts
Tomoe River paper at 52 g/m² weighs about half as much as standard copy paper. The special surface treatment – a two-sided coating – is why fountain pen inks on this paper neither feather nor bleed through, even though the material is so thin. The low absorbency of the surface also means that ink stays longer on the surface and the full color depth, sheening effects and shading become visible – properties that are lost on more absorbent papers. The paper is acid-free and thus suitable for permanent archiving; Hobonichi itself states that the notebook should still be flippable after decades.
