Natural Beige is a warm, creamy beige from the Kuretake Gansai Tambi series – a traditional Japanese watercolour in cake form, handcrafted with professional pigments. The colour bears the Japanese traditional name 鳥の子 (torinoko), named after the natural off-white of bird eggs, and is based on pigments PW6 (titanium white) and PY42 (iron oxide yellow). The large cake with its creamy-soft colour body dissolves easily with minimal effort – ready to use quickly and tidied away just as fast.

Use & Tips

• As skin tone base: Natural Beige works as a starting point for skin tones in portraiture and illustration – adding red, orange or brown quickly extends the range.
• On black or dark paper: Thanks to the opacity from PW6, Natural Beige remains clear and warm even on dark surfaces – perfect for light effects and bright highlights in dark compositions.
• Sumi-e and ink drawing: Originally developed for colouring ink drawings – Natural Beige suits soft skin tones over ink lines without obscuring them.
• Wet-on-dry preferred: Gansai colours flow less than Western watercolours and offer particularly good control on dry surfaces. For wet-in-wet techniques, work quickly as colour layers dissolve again when reworked.
• Layering with care: When painting one layer over another, the lower layer slightly dissolves again – multi-layered techniques work best with thoroughly dry layers and quick brushstrokes.
• Mixing colour for pastels: Natural Beige can be mixed with other Gansai Tambi colours to create muted pastel tones – particularly harmonious with Rose Beige (No. 12) or Cherry Blossom Pink (No. 14).

Natural Beige is, in pigment terms, an opaque mixed colour from PW6 (Pigment White 6, titanium white) and PY42 (Pigment Yellow 42, synthetic iron oxide yellow). PY42 is an inorganic pigment with excellent lightfastness and outstanding mixing stability – it does not bleed or granulate. The high proportion of white pigment explains why Natural Beige clouds wash water milky when diluted: this is not a quality issue but systemic and typical of the Gansai tradition. Those wanting to apply transparent glaze layers should work with little colour and plenty of water, allowing each layer to dry completely. According to Kuretake, lightfastness is considered good but decreases with higher water ratios – for archival work a moderate water content is recommended.
