Kuretake Gansai Tambi Watercolor No.12 ROSE BEIGE
Rose Beige (No. 12) is a warm, delicate rosé-beige – a shade reminiscent of pale cherry blossoms and light, unbleached linen alike. The Gansai Tambi individual color from Kuretake comes handcrafted in a pan: water-soluble, creamy in application, and pigment-rich enough to work both opaquely like gouache and transparently like classical watercolor. The color is created from a combination of pigments PW6, PY42, and PR48:3 – a calm, versatile beige tone with a warm rosé shimmer.
Special Features
- Double coverage depending on water content: When mixed pure and sparingly with water, Rose Beige creates a creamy, slightly opaque layer – ideal for light skin tones, floral motifs, or lettering on dark paper. With more water, it creates a delicate, transparent wash for glazes and soft backgrounds.
- Handcrafted in a large pan (approx. 48 × 28 mm): The generous format allows direct dipping of wide brushes and broad application without cumbersome reloading.
- Pigment-based and lightfast: The water-based pigment colors are lightfast – when used in concentrated form, light stability remains particularly high.
- Individually replaceable: The pan can be inserted into existing Gansai Tambi palettes or used as a standalone color – practical for replacing exhausted shades or for targeted expansion of a set.
- Made in Japan, in the tradition of Kuretake's sumi ink production.
Application & Tips
- Botanical illustration: Rose Beige is excellent for delicate flower petals, pale peach or cherry blossom tones – applied pure for rich areas, diluted for translucent flower highlights.
- Hand lettering and calligraphy: Mixed with a soft brush, the color works well for brush lettering; on smooth, ink-resistant paper it flows cleanly and doesn't bleed.
- Skin tones and portrait sketches: In combination with Natural Beige (No. 11) and Cherry Blossom Pink (No. 14), it creates nuanced, light skin tones for portraits and figure illustrations.
- Etegami and Sumi-e: The warm, muted rosé-beige tone fits the color language of traditional Japanese postcard painting.
- Paper choice: On smooth, calendered paper, the tone remains brilliant and flows precisely. On textured watercolor paper, softer, more lively edges and slight granulation develop.
For Watercolor Enthusiasts
The pigment composition of Rose Beige – PW6 (titanium white), PY42 (iron oxide yellow), and PR48:3 (organic red) – explains the characteristic warm base tone with a hint of silky rosé warmth. The combination of these three pigments creates not a garish, but an earthy pastel color with a slightly milky-opaque character, typical of the Gansai Tambi colors in this series. If you dilute the color heavily, note that light stability decreases with increasing water content – for works meant to be permanently preserved, a moderate ratio of paint to water is recommended.
