Kuretake Gansai Tambi Watercolor No.270 GRAPHITE BROWN
Graphite Brown No. 270 is one of six colours from the Graphite line of Kuretake Gansai Tambi – handcrafted Japanese watercolours that sit between traditional watercolour and gouache. The colour displays a deep, muted earthy brown with graphite character: matte, dense, and with a subtle granulation in wet application. The pigment base is a blend of graphite (PBk10) and iron oxide red (PR101).
Features
- Graphite as primary pigment (PBk10 + PR101): The graphite gives this brown its characteristic mutedness and matte depth. Applied thinly, the colour appears warm grey-brown; in concentrated application, it becomes an almost black, chocolate-dark brown.
- Dries exceptionally matte: Unlike other Gansai Tambi colours that may dry with a slight sheen, the Graphite line remains velvety-matte even with thick application – until the surface is deliberately rubbed or polished.
- Polishing effect through graphite: When the dried colour layer is rubbed with a soft cloth or fingernail, a subtle metallic shimmer appears – similar to the shine that pencil graphite develops under firm pressure.
- Large pan format (48 × 28 mm): The generous-sized well allows for broad brushwork and large-scale glazes without needing to re-wet constantly.
- Available individually: As a single colour, Graphite Brown can be added selectively to existing sets or reordered as a replacement.
- Not archival: Water-based colour; dry layers can be re-dissolved – ideal for softening and reworking, but not archive-quality in the traditional sense.
Use & Tips
- Night scenes and muted palettes: Graphite Brown is particularly suited to illustrations with a monochromatic, earthy mood – misty landscapes, sepia-toned sketches, urban night scenes.
- Dry and concentrated: Applied with little water, it creates a heavy, opaque brown; diluted with more water, the colour becomes translucent and granulated.
- Polishing as a creative technique: After drying, polish individual areas with a paper tissue or fingertip to create deliberately metallic accents – particularly effective for rocks, metal or wood surfaces.
- Combination with other Graphite colours: Graphite Brown can be combined with other Graphite tones (Graphite Red, Graphite Blue, Graphite Green, etc.) to create a completely muted palette – the matte, graphite quality is retained even when mixed.
- Paper: Granulation is most pronounced on watercolour paper from 300 g/m² onwards. Washi and rice paper absorb the colour more softly; on black paper, the warm brown tone stands out well due to its opacity.
- Reactivatable: Dried colour in the pan can be reactivated at any time with a damp brush – no hardening, no material loss.
For Illustration Enthusiasts
The Graphite line was introduced in 2022 as a distinct colour family within the Gansai Tambi range. The defining characteristic of this group is the high graphite content (PBk10) in every colour: it makes the colour behaviour measurably different from other Gansai Tambi tones – the mass tones dry exceptionally matte, show slight granulation through pigment separation in the wet state, and respond with the polishing effect described above to mechanical pressure after drying. Graphite Brown is the earthy, warm-neutral position in this group, with PR101 (synthetic iron oxide red) as the secondary colour-giving pigment alongside the dominant graphite black.
