Kuretake Gansai Tambi Watercolor No.303 MAUVE TAUPE
Mauve Taupe No. 303 is a warm, muted dusty rose with a greyish-brown undertone – a colour that defies easy categorisation as either purple or beige, and is all the more versatile for it. Gansai Tambi watercolour by Kuretake is a traditional Japanese medium: hand-poured, water-pigment based, and with a creamy-soft consistency that responds immediately to water contact. Depending on the water content, the tone ranges from warm and opaque to delicate, subtly shimmering washes.
Features
- Pigment composition PW6, PBk7: Titanium white and lamp black give Mauve Taupe its characteristic, slightly muted depth – the tone remains legible even when heavily diluted and doesn't fade into colourlessness.
- Semi-opaque coverage: The colour behaves more opaquely than Western watercolours. Applied as an opaque layer, it creates an even, matte finish; with more water, transparent, slightly glossy glazes emerge.
- Creamy-soft consistency: The colour dissolves completely with minimal water, applies cleanly, and develops a subtle silk sheen as it dries.
- Easy mixing: Mauve Taupe combines well with other Gansai Tambi shades – for instance with greys for cool neutrals, or with dusty rose tones for warm transitions.
- Hand-crafted in Japan: Each colour is hand-poured in Japan. The surface may show small air bubbles – a hallmark of handmade production that does not affect colour performance.
- Available as individual pan: Supplied as a single pan to complement existing sets or replace used colours.
Use & Tips
- Illustration and portrait painting: Mauve Taupe is particularly suited to skin tones with cool undertones, shadowed areas in facial portraiture, or delicate colour gradations in backgrounds.
- Botanical sketches: The broken rose tone suits dried flowers, lavender, or winter berries – subjects where a too-vibrant pink would look out of place.
- Hand-lettering and calligraphy: With a fine detail brush, you can draw opaque lines; the semi-opaque quality makes corrections and layering on light paper very feasible.
- Water content controls character: Little water yields a gouache-like, almost matte finish. Plenty of water reduces opacity and leaves a delicate, subtly glossy shimmer.
- Paper recommendation: On smooth, ink-proof watercolour paper or calendered surfaces, the colour flows and blends particularly cleanly. Rough watercolour paper will emphasise texture noticeably.
- Combination with other media: Gansai Tambi dries with a light sheen and can be overdrawn with ink or fine-liner once dry without bleeding.
For Watercolour Enthusiasts
Mauve Taupe No. 303 contains titanium white (PW6) and lamp black (PBk7) as its pigment base – a combination typical of broken, earthy tones in the Gansai Tambi range. Unlike transparent Western watercolours, the semi-opaque formula allows for direct working: areas can be built up quickly and with even colour density without underlayers showing through prominently. The subtle silk sheen after drying results from Kuretake's special pigment technology and clearly distinguishes Gansai Tambi from classical gouaches, which dry flat. If working with masking techniques or masking fluid, apply these before adding colour, as the opaque layer can slightly soften the pan surface if removed later.
