Gansai Tambi No. 601 Grayish Blue is a single colour pan from Kuretake's traditional Japanese watercolour series – handcrafted in Japan, pigment-based and bound in water-soluble medium. The tone moves between a muted steel blue and a cool slate grey, carrying a quiet, restrained quality that works well with darker earth tones or bright aqua blues. Like all Gansai Tambi colours, the colour cake dissolves quickly with a damp brush and can be controlled from opaque to transparent depending on water content.

Features

  • Japanese tradition, modern pigment: Gansai Tambi is built on over 100 years of Kuretake's ink-making tradition. The water-based pigment delivers intense colour taken directly from the pan – no lengthy mixing required.
  • Opaque to transparent control: With little water, the colour works creamy and opaque like gouache, leaving a subtle satin sheen. With more water it becomes transparent and luminous – similar to classical Western watercolour.
  • Large pan, broad brush compatibility: The format of approximately 48 × 28 mm allows the use of wide, flat brushes and enables large washes and quick sketches.
  • Minimal granulation: The colour cake dries to a smooth, even layer – Grayish Blue sits cleanly on paper without flocking or appearing grainy. Ideal for flat passages and soft transitions.
  • Good reactivation: Dried colour can be reactivated by dampening again – corrections or colour lightening are possible even afterwards.
  • Available individually: The pan fits into all Gansai Tambi palettes and is suitable for refilling or expanding an existing collection.

Use & Tips

  • Activation: Work a well-saturated brush in circular motions on the colour cake for about a minute before painting – this delivers even, saturated colour.
  • Washes mixed on palette: For light, transparent washes, dilute the colour on a separate palette with water – excess water left in the pan can cause the cake to crack as it dries.
  • Grayish Blue on black paper: Thanks to good opacity, the colour works well on dark grounds. On black watercolour paper or toned sketchbook pages, the cool grey-blue tones appear particularly clear.
  • Combinations: The muted grey-blue tone harmonises with other neutral tones such as Beige-Grey (No. 406), Shadow Green (No. 506) or deep blue-grey (No. 68) – well suited for atmospheric landscapes, architectural sketches or Sumi-e style illustration.
  • Calligraphy & lettering: With a wide brush and minimal water, Gansai Tambi can produce opaque, calligraphic brushstrokes – the colour tone works well for modern brush lettering projects with a cool, restrained mood.
  • Paper: Works on watercolour paper, rice paper and sketchbook paper. On highly absorbent surfaces, the colour dries faster and slightly lighter.

For Watercolour Enthusiasts

Gansai Tambi differs from Western watercolours through its alternative binder system – not gum arabic, but a water-soluble resin derived from Sumi ink tradition. This affects drying behaviour: the colour sets quickly, granulates minimally and dries with a subtle sheen – when applied heavily (mass tone) a satin gloss film can develop, which shifts to a matte, transparent quality when diluted. Since Kuretake does not publish pigment numbers for individual colours, lightfastness cannot be independently verified. Kuretake rates the colours as lightfast; with heavily diluted washes, lightfastness may diminish.
