Kuretake Gansai Tambi Watercolor No.734 PEARL PINK
The Kuretake Gansai Tambi No. 734 Pearl Pink is a single watercolour pan from the Pearl Colors series – a shimmering rose with pearlescent lustre that remains visible on both light and dark paper. Gansai Tambi follows a Japanese tradition: the name combines "Gansai" (solid pigment colour) and "Tambi" (aesthetics). The binder is not based on gum arabic, but on a centuries-old Japanese method using alternative binders – resulting in a creamy consistency with high pigment density and a characteristic silk sheen when dry.
Features
- Pearlescent shimmer: The colour contains pearl lustre pigments that glow particularly brightly on dark paper and produce a soft, shimmering rose tone on light paper.
- Creamy, easily mixable consistency: The pan dissolves quickly and evenly with a damp brush – no lumps, no harsh transitions. Wet-on-wet techniques work smoothly directly on the pan or on the palette.
- Variable opacity: With little water, the colour appears opaque and rich like gouache; with plenty of water it becomes transparent and luminous – a broad spectrum for glazes, backgrounds and accents.
- Large pan (approx. 48 × 28 mm): The format is designed for wider brushes – large backgrounds can be applied with full coverage without refilling.
- Non-toxic: The colour is certified non-toxic; all cobalt and cadmium tones in the Gansai Tambi range are hues.
- Available individually: Supplied as a single pan in a clear plastic wallet – compatible with all standard Gansai Tambi palettes and sets.
Use & Tips
- Dark paper: Pearl Pink reveals its pearlescent lustre most distinctly on black or dark grey paper – ideal for lettering, brush calligraphy or illustrative accents on toned grounds.
- Activation: Soak the pan thoroughly with a wet brush for about one minute before painting – this produces even, rich colour pickup without streaking.
- Transparent glazes: Applied highly diluted on smooth, satin watercolour paper, a luminous rose with shimmering light reflections emerges – particularly effective as a background wash for watercolour journals or cards.
- Mixing on the palette: Mix larger amounts of water outside the pan on the palette – excess water in the pan can cause cracking as it dries.
- Calligraphy and brush lettering: Pearl Pink can be taken directly from the pan with a soft round or brush lettering nib. The consistency is fluid enough for even strokes, opaque enough for legible, luminous letters.
- Rehydratable: Already dried colour areas can be reactivated with water – corrections and transitions are possible even afterwards.
For Calligraphy Enthusiasts
Pearl Pink belongs to the pearl colour series, which is specially formulated with shimmer pigments. Unlike classical watercolours that appear flat when dry, this colour displays a lively gloss effect depending on the light – making it particularly interesting for lettering projects where the finished text is viewed from different angles. Those who pick up the colour directly with a brush lettering nib or broad calligraphy nib benefit from the silky-creamy texture: it flows across the paper in a controlled manner without splaying, and dries with a subtle silk sheen that makes the letterforms appear three-dimensional.
