The Sailor Professional Gear Slim Mini is the most compact version of the Professional Gear family – a fountain pen made from PMMA resin with a cut cap, recessed anchor logo on the cap tip, and a nib made from 14-carat gold. When closed, it fits comfortably in any trouser pocket; with the cap posted, it achieves a full writing length. The Extra-Fine nib is ground in typical Japanese fashion: precise, with minimal nib pressure and a fine line.

Special Features

  • 14K gold nib in Extra Fine (EF): Sailor's Japanese EF grind produces a very fine, controlled line – ideal for Latin script in small font sizes and for Kanji or Hiragana, where every stroke counts. The gold nib gives slightly when writing, making the nib pressure significantly softer compared to steel nib tips.
  • Compact format with posting function: 109 mm closed, 136 mm with cap posted. The body fits comfortably in the palm of your hand; posted, the pen reaches a length that allows for extended writing without fatigue.
  • PMMA resin in Ivory: The polymethylmethacrylate body has a smooth, slightly cool surface and an ivory-colored tone that lies between white and warm cream. The fittings – clip and cap – are gold-plated and echo the golden tone of the nib.
  • Cut cap with anchor logo: The characteristic flat-top cap is a hallmark of the Professional Gear line; the recessed Sailor anchor logo sits flush with the cap tip.
  • Mini converter compatible: Due to the compact design, standard Sailor converters are not compatible. The model accepts Sailor short cartridges as well as the Sailor Mini Converter.

Application & Tips

  • As a pocket or notebook companion: The short design makes the Slim Mini the ideal companion for Hobonichi planners or other compact notebooks – it disappears in the book band without pressing.
  • Paper recommendation for EF: An EF gold nib is sensitive to paper roughness. On smooth, calendered paper, the nib flows particularly smoothly and the fine line remains sharp. On textured paper, the nib may show slightly more resistance, which some writers appreciate as pleasant feedback.
  • Filling with Mini Converter: The Sailor Mini Converter holds less ink than a standard converter – those who frequently change ink or are on the go benefit from a small reserve of short cartridges as backup.
  • Posting habit: If you write with the pen unposted, you have a very light, short pen – this can be pleasant for people with small hands, but may require getting used to for others. Testing with the cap posted is worthwhile to find your preferred balance.

For Fountain Pen Enthusiasts

Sailor's 14K gold nibs are handcrafted and ground in Hiroshima. The EF nib of the Professional Gear Slim Mini is optimized for the Japanese market: it writes finer than a European EF and is designed for inks with normal to slightly elevated surface tension. Iron gall inks and heavily flowing inks can be more temperamental in very fine nibs – well-flowing, medium-watery inks provide the most consistent writing here. The Mini Converter works with a simple piston mechanism and can also be filled manually with a syringe or pipette, which significantly increases filling comfort given the small capacity.
