The Midori 5-Year Calendar Stories in black and gold combines Japanese bookbinding tradition with a concept that deepens with every entry: each page is divided into five narrow sections – one per year – so that the same line in the second, third, fourth and fifth year sits alongside your own entry from exactly twelve months before. The cover is crafted from black linen fabric with gold-foiled lettering, whilst the interior is made entirely from Midori's MD paper in cream white. Made in Japan.

Features

  • Five-year structure: Each of the 366 pages is divided into five equal sections marked with year numbers. After the first cycle, as you write you automatically read along with what appeared on this exact day in previous years – a built-in retrospective without any effort.
  • MD paper, cream white, 7 mm ruling: Midori's MD paper is smooth-calendered and slightly absorbent – ink dries in a controlled manner without feathering or bleeding through. The cream-white tone makes lighter ink colours (pastels, greys, soft blues) stand out far better than pure white.
  • Fountain pen friendly: MD paper was developed specifically for fountain pens. Fine to broad nibs, wet inks, pigmented inks – everything remains crisp and halo-free. Soft pencils and fineliners work flawlessly too.
  • Thread binding: The book lies flat without pages springing back or the binding cracking – even in year five when the book is completely filled.
  • Hardcover linen binding with gold foiling: Black fabric cover with a matte texture and gold foil embossing. Durable enough for daily handling over five years, yet light enough to slip into a bag.
  • Ribbon bookmark & 3-page appendix: The sewn-in ribbon bookmark marks the current day permanently; the appendix provides space for notes outside the daily structure.

Use & Tips

  • Brief daily entries instead of essays: The narrow section per year and day limits entries to a few lines – this removes the pressure to write at length and makes the calendar practical even during busy weeks.
  • Fountain pens with medium to fine nibs: With 7 mm ruling and five sections per page, nibs in the F to M range are recommended for fluid, legible writing that stays within the line boundaries. Stub nibs work well for headings or date marking.
  • Choose your ink: Document-archival inks ensure legibility across all five years; non-archival, heavily saturated inks can easily bleed onto the next section with a very wet nib – it's worth reducing ink flow or opting for a drier nib.
  • Drawings and sketches: MD paper accepts fineliners and pencils without buckling. Small sketches, stamps or pasted-in tickets fit within the sections as long as you don't overstuff the book's volume.
  • Undated calendar: The book has no pre-printed years – you can start any time, not just on 1 January.

For Diary Enthusiasts

MD paper (formerly known as "DW paper") is a writing paper developed exclusively for Midori and made in Japan, with a weight that holds ink on the surface without absorbing it immediately – the result is richer lettering with a subtle sheen right after writing, before the ink fully sets. This book's thread binding is engineered so the block creates no crease at the spine when lying flat – important because with 366 pages × 5 sections across five years, you'll be writing very close to the gutter. The black linen cover is not laminated but raw-woven, which gives it a distinctive, subtly patinated surface after years of daily use.
