Refill 026 is a dot grid notebook made from white MD Paper – a writing paper that Traveler's Company has specially developed for fountain pens since the 1960s. The surface is smooth, slightly textured, and responds to ink with minimal show-through and barely any feathering. The saddle-stitch binding lies flat, and the format (11 × 21 cm) fits precisely into the Regular Size cover.

Features

  • MD Paper – fountain pen friendly since the 1960s: The paper was developed by Designphil (Midori/Traveler's Company) specifically for writing with fountain pens. It is acid-free, calendered smooth, and absorbent ink dries faster than on many other smooth papers – a noticeable advantage when writing quickly and for left-handed writers.
  • Dot grid 5 × 5 mm: The small dots are printed in a light, subtle manner. They structure the page without dominating the writing – visible enough as an orientation guide, unobtrusive enough not to interfere.
  • White paper: Unlike the cream-colored MD Paper variant (025), the 026 displays ink colors more clearly and with greater contrast – ideal when color reproduction and shading matter.
  • 64 pages, saddle-stitch binding: The binding lies completely flat in the leather cover; both sides of each sheet are usable.
  • Made in Japan: Manufactured by Designphil in Japan.

Use & Tips

  • Fountain pens: MD Paper handles medium and broad nibs without issues. With very wet broad nibs or flex nibs, slight ghosting may occur; show-through is rare. Drying times are shorter than on heavily coated paper.
  • Bullet journaling & layouts: The 5 mm grid allows precise table fields, habit trackers, calendar grids, and page divisions – without lines overwhelming the finished layout.
  • Illustration & sketches: Pencils grip well on the slightly textured MD surface; the paper is also suitable for fine inks and pigment liners.
  • Combine multiple refills: Those who want to separate different areas – such as notes, sketches, daily planning – can combine multiple refills with a connecting rubber band in the same cover.
  • Gel rollers & ballpoint pens: According to manufacturer specifications, the paper works well with other writing instruments; fast-drying gel pens and oil-based ballpoint ink show no show-through.

For Paper Enthusiasts

MD Paper is not ordinary writing paper: Designphil has optimized the formulation over decades for liquid transport and writing feel. The result is paper that accepts ink quickly without fraying or showing through significantly – a balance that is harder to achieve on calendered smooth paper than on deeply sized cotton paper. Compared to very thin, slow-drying Japanese writing papers, MD Paper is more robust for everyday use and less sensitive to moisture and pressure. The white 026 paper makes ink shading and sheen more visible than the cream-colored variant.
