The MD Notebook in B6 Slim format is essentially a pad of MD Paper – a cream-colored, 80 g/m² lightweight paper that has been continuously refined since 1960 for use with fountain pens, pencils, and all other writing instruments. The format is oriented towards the Japanese paperback book: narrow enough for one hand, long enough for a page of text. The blank variant leaves the double page as a unified, continuous surface – without lines or dots to guide or limit the eye.

Features

  • MD Paper, 80 g/m², cream-colored: The slightly warm tone reduces contrast between paper and ink, relieving eye strain during long writing sessions. The smooth, yet subtly textured surface allows writing nibs to glide evenly – even fine nibs with minimal ink flow. Ink absorbs quickly without smudging, and fountain pen inks display distinct shading and sheen.
  • Thread binding with open spine: The sheets are sewn together with thread, and the book spine is bonded with a simple gauze tape – visible, not hidden. This allows the notebook to lie completely flat on the table from first to last page without resistance. The cover itself is lightweight parchment paper that serves as a temporary protective dust jacket or can be removed.
  • Blank format: No lines, no grid. The double page functions as a single, undivided surface – for freehand sketches, layouts, diagrams, or writing samples in varying sizes. Ideal for calligraphy practice, where line height and angle are self-determined.
  • Ribbon marker and index stickers: The orange fabric ribbon is integrated directly into the binding. Included index stickers (label field and variants "Idea" and "Diary") allow the completed notebook to be clearly identified on the shelf.
  • Ink resistance: MD Paper is resistant to liquid fountain pen ink – no show-through, no feathering of lettering edges during normal fountain pen use. Not archival.

Application & Tips

  • Fountain pens with fine nibs: On the smooth MD surface, particularly fine and superfine nibs produce clean, clear lines. Rapid ink absorption prevents smudging, even with quick writing.
  • Calligraphy with broad nibs: The blank surface without a preset grid allows you to freely adjust line heights, stroke angles, and character size – practical for practicing different writing styles on one page.
  • Sketchbook use: When opened, the double page provides approximately 210 × 175 mm of undivided space. Well-suited for pen drawings, layouts, and quick illustrations with fountain pen or gel ink. Watercolors and heavily wet techniques are not recommended due to the light paper weight.
  • Travel and pocket format: At 175 × 105 × 10 mm and approximately 153 g, the notebook fits into any inner pocket. The slim portrait format lies stably in the hand even when held with one hand.
  • Parchment cover as protection or design surface: The included cover can be folded over the notebook for transport protection. Those preferring a firmer cover can use the separately available MD Covers in clear, cardboard, or leather.
  • Filing: The included index stickers with blank label fields can be applied to the spine of the completed book – making an entire series of MD notebooks easily readable on the shelf at a glance.

For Paper Enthusiasts

MD Paper was originally developed as diary paper and is acid-free and pH-neutral – the written pages do not yellow and remain stable over the years. The surface is neither heavily calendered nor untreated rough, but lies at a moderate smoothness level that provides good adhesion for both ink and pencil. With chromatic fountain pen inks containing high pigment content, MD Paper often displays distinct wet-gloss effects (sheen) at the ink edge – a characteristic that is particularly prominent on smooth, low-absorbency paper. The B6 Slim format corresponds to the Japanese paperback standard and is designed so that stored notebooks fit on the shelf next to regular books.
