The Find Edge is Kunisawa's notebook with its most distinctive detail: matte silver foil on the page edges – understated, cool, precise. The cream-coloured Kinmari paper at 84.3 gsm feels noticeably firm and smooth under the nib, whilst the blue hardcover (Nibuao) has a matte, slightly cool surface. The notebook is crafted in Shimbashi, Tokyo, by Kawachiya – a company whose craftsmanship heritage stretches back to the Edo period (1603–1868).

Features

  • Kinmari Cream White, 84.3 gsm: This paper is cold-satin finished and exceptionally smooth – fountain pens with medium or fine nibs glide without resistance. The script remains sharp, inks dry evenly across the surface.
  • 5 mm dot grid: The dots are printed in light grey and barely show through the writing – ideal for those who want both structured note-taking and free sketching without distracting lines.
  • Lay-flat binding: The notebook lies completely flat on the table in any position – no holding required, no tension, full writing surface right to the spine.
  • Matte silver foil on page edges: The edge finish is not glossy gold but matte grey-silver – restrained and perfectly suited to the blue cover colour.
  • Ribbon bookmark: Solid colour matching the cover. Quick page marking without adhesive strips or clips.
  • Hardcover, matte blue surface (Nibuao): Nibuao is a muted, calm blue – neither bright maritime nor dark navy. The matte finish resists fingerprints.

Use & Tips

  • Fountain pens: Kinmari paper handles wet inks well, provided the nib isn't extremely broad or particularly wet-writing. Fine to medium nibs and stub nibs in B-width work reliably. Very wet nibs or flex nibs with heavy ink flow may cause slight show-through with dense writing; a brief drying pause between pages helps.
  • Gel rollers and liquid ink rollers: They glide particularly smoothly on the smooth Kinmari paper. Pigmented gel roller refills deliver sharp lines without smudging.
  • Bullet journalling and structured layouts: The 5 mm dot grid allows clean tables, calendars and diagrams – the dots are discreet enough not to distract from freehand sketches.
  • Calligraphy with stub nibs: For practice pages with modern scripts (such as Italic or Copperplate variants), the A5 format works well – it offers sufficient space for multi-line exercises. For classical pointed-pen calligraphy on coated paper, ink-resistant calendered paper remains the first choice; however, Kinmari paper is sufficiently smooth for many modern calligraphic styles.
  • Protecting the edge finish: The matte silver foil stays pristine longest when the notebook isn't carried loose in a bag – a simple notebook sleeve or elastic band is sufficient.

For Paper Enthusiasts

Kinmari is a Japanese paper variety renowned for its uniform surface structure and creamy tone. At 84.3 gsm, it sits in the upper range for bound notebooks – heavy enough to minimise show-through with most ink types, yet not so thick that 192 pages make the book unwieldy. Kawachiya – the company behind the Kunisawa brand – produces in Shimbashi, Tokyo, and has stood for paper and stationery craftsmanship since the 17th century. Within the Kunisawa range, the Find Edge is the model with the most striking physical finish: while other models rely on plain card covers, the Edge combines hardcover with foil embossing on the page edges.
