Tsubame Notebook Section grid (A4)
The Tsubame Section notebook A4 with 5 mm grid is a classic Japanese writing notebook, used in Japanese universities for decades. Its smooth, delicate white natural paper feels pleasantly cool under the hand and responds reliably to fountain pen ink as well as gel pens or mechanical pencils. The sewn binding holds the 80 pages firmly together – the notebook lies flat on the desk and can be opened completely without the pages warping.
Features
- Smooth natural paper, approx. 81.4–85 g/m²: The uncoated, slightly textured fibres of so-called Fools Paper ensure minimal show-through and hardly any ink bleed-through – even with broad nibs or wet inks, the reverse side remains usable.
- 5 mm grid in light grey: The subtle grid guides the eye without dominating the writing. The 5 mm spacing is equally suited to Latin script, technical sketches and tabular notes.
- Watermark grid pattern in the paper: Held up to the light, the paper reveals a fine grid watermark – a hallmark of careful Japanese papermaking.
- Sewn binding: Each page lies perfectly flat; the binding will not give way even after many years. No adhesive that becomes brittle.
- Cardboard cover with black fabric strip: The spine is reinforced with a black fabric strip and a paper label running across it – a typical feature of Japanese notebooks that protects the spine during daily use.
- Size slightly larger than DIN A4: At 30.5 × 21 cm, the notebook is 8 mm taller than the DIN A4 standard format – a historical relic of Japanese paper sizing that offers more writing space per page.
- Made in Japan: Tsubame Note has been producing in Japan since 1947; the cover design has remained unchanged for decades.
Use & Tips
- Fountain pen with medium or broad nib: The paper rewards inks with good colour saturation – rich black or deep blue stands out beautifully on the delicate white surface. Drying time is short, feathering barely perceptible.
- Calligraphy with broad steel nib: The 5 mm grid serves as an orientation grid for x-height and ascenders and descenders. Those writing with a stub nib can use the squares as a proportion guide.
- Technical sketches and diagrams: The generous A4 format provides enough space for flowcharts, network plans or simple technical drawings alongside handwritten notes.
- Bullet journalling and structured planning: The 5 mm grid allows clean columns, tables and trackers without a ruler – the squares are large enough for legible handwriting.
- Archiving: The acid-free paper ensures that notes and ink colours remain stable for many years.
- Tip for left-handers: Thanks to the sewn binding, the notebook lies completely flat – the left hand does not slide over a raised spiral.
For Paper Enthusiasts
Tsubame Fools Paper is one of the most discussed papers in Japanese writing culture. Tsubame calls "Fools Paper" an uncooked, natural paper with slight surface texture that absorbs ink differently than calendered smooth papers: the ink dries quickly, does not feather, and the nib glides across the surface with minimal resistance – a sensation that fountain pen writers appreciate as "feedback". The watermark grid is not a decorative element but a testament to the screen structure in the paper-making process. The cardboard cover is designed with typography printing – the golden swallow on the spine is executed in foil stamping.
