Polish Notebook Luna Nów - New Moon
The “Luna Nów” is a notebook from the Polish Kraków manufactory Papierniczeni – handcrafted, thread-sewn, featuring a navy blue softcover with a dotted new moon motif printed with fine glitter particles. Interior: 112 smooth, unlined pages of uncoated 100 g/m² paper, specially developed for use with fountain pens. The binding follows the Otabind principle with wide inner flaps – the block lies flat on the table when opened, without counter-pressure.
Highlights
- Otabind thread binding with wide flaps: The signatures are hand-sewn together with thread and suspended in the cover. The wide flaps stabilize the open notebook further and keep the pages still – particularly useful when working on your lap or on the go.
- Completely flat-opening: Neither the spine fold nor the book spine exerts counter-pressure. Both sides lie flat – this allows writing all the way to the inner edge without having to hold the notebook. The slightly protruding spine is a characteristic feature of this handcrafted binding method.
- Uncoated 100 g/m² paper: The paper is not calendered but has a natural, slightly textured surface – this gives fountain pen ink time to spread without immediately sinking in. Colors appear rich, line widths remain defined. FSC-certified.
- Navy blue softcover with new moon motif: The cover features a dotted moon design with shimmering particles – designed by Polish illustrator Bartek Wajer. The dark, calm surface is pleasantly grippy and feels good in hand.
- Slim format 12 × 20 cm: Narrower and slimmer than a classic A5. The notebook fits into a jacket pocket without bending the pages and takes up less space on the desk than a full-format notebook.
Application & Tips
- Fountain pens and liquid ink pens: The uncoated, unsized paper handles water-based ink well – from fountain pens with fine to medium nibs as well as liquid ink pens. With very wet nibs or highly flowing inks, a brief drying time before turning pages is recommended. Pigment inks and iron gall ink-based inks show particularly vibrant results on this paper.
- Calligraphy and lettering: The smooth, closed paper surface allows clean upstrokes and downstrokes with broad nibs. Since the notebook lies completely flat into the spine, the area near the binding can be fully utilized – for two-page layouts or large-scale lettering.
- Journaling and reflection notes: The slim format is undistracting through its narrowness – one page corresponds to a natural text block. The new moon motif and the dark aesthetic of the cover suit evening writing rituals, dream notes, or contemplative everyday observations.
- On the go and while traveling: The lightweight design and slim format make this notebook an ideal companion for sketches, travel notes, and quick thoughts. The flaps keep inserted slips of paper or cut-out references in place.
- As a gift: The moon motif and Kraków craftsmanship make this notebook a fitting gift for people who write consciously and with beautiful tools – at the turn of the year, at winter solstice, or without any special occasion.
For Bookbinding Enthusiasts
Otabind thread binding combines two properties that often contradict each other in other binding forms: completely flat opening and a stable, self-contained softcover. Individual sections (signatures) are sewn together with thread; the finished block is then suspended in the cover so that the spine and cover are movably connected to each other – hence the characteristically slightly protruding book spine. This connection is considerably more durable than machine-glued paperback spines: the pages do not come loose from the block even with daily use over years. The wide inner flaps are not merely decorative but part of the construction: they distribute the opening forces and protect the first and last pages from creasing.
